Something’s Up With Katy Perry

If you’ve been following Katy Perry’s career over the past couple of months — and who’s been able to look away — then you’ve probably noticed she’s been acting more than a little all over the place.

While at first it didn’t seem like anything, people are starting to get concerned that Katy’s actually losing it.

And even if you don’t believe it, you have to admit, something’s definitely up with her.

Katy Perry’s entire appeal used to be built around the fact that she didn’t take herself too seriously. She sang about feeling like a plastic bag and shot whipped cream out of her boobs. Unlike the Taylor Swifts of the world, she wasn’t trying to be deep. She was just trying to have fun. And that’s what her songs were. They were fun.

And they were good.

But then she changed.

Somewhere along the way, Katy Perry decided to grow up and get woke.

Well, she sort of got woke.

A more accurate term for it would be she got selectively woke. Because after Hillary Clinton lost the election, Katy’s had a hard time navigating her new woke persona without running into icebergs left and right.

And just like her new persona is kind of all over the place, her new songs are all over the place too.

Only that’s not the way Katy Perry wants you to see them. She wants you to think they’re very deep.

She explained to Jimmy Fallon that her new album “Witness” is about “360-degree liberation.”

“‘Chained to the Rhythm’ was this political liberation. ‘Bon Appetit’ was a sexual liberation. And now, I think ‘Swish [Swish]’ is a liberation from all the negative that doesn’t serve you,” Katy explained.

Only here’s the thing: besides “Chained to the Rhythm,” her music doesn’t sound any deeper than it ever was.

“Bon Appetite” is about Katy Perry having the best “cherry pie” in town, and “Swish Swish” is a petty Taylor Swift diss track masquerading as an anti-bullying anthem.

But that’s not how Katy Perry sees them.

She sees them as being deeper and so she expects us to too.

And on top of all that, Katy’s personality is growing increasingly unhinged. Like somebody told her to lean into being her truest, most authentic kooky self, and Katy learned way, way too far in.

People have all different ways of describing it.

Some say she’s been possessed by a demon.

Some say she’s turned into a cool mom who thinks she can still hang with the kids.

And some people just think that for all her talk about taking care of her mental health, Katy’s lost her damn mind.

Whatever you want to call it, it all spells out the same thing for Katy Perry: people don’t seem to like her anymore.

Where they used to see a fun girl who knows how to have a good time, now they just see an insane girl who takes herself too seriously and will embarrass you in public.

There are a few explanations.

Maybe Katy Perry’s going through a delayed quarter-life crisis. Maybe she’s not taking her breakup with Orlando Bloom well. Maybe she feels overexposed and it’s taking a hit on her mental health. Or maybe this is just who she’s always been, and she’s just now feeling comfortable expressing it.

Honestly, we won’t know for a while.

Maybe weeks. Maybe months. And maybe not for years.

For now, it doesn’t actually matter if people like Katy or hate her — she’s still gonna find a way to make bank. In fact, she just got a $25 million deal to judge “American Idol,” so she really doesn’t need our concern.

But if her career does go belly up at some point, just know we’re blaming it on the Met Gala curse.
