Turns Out the Met Gala Might Be Cursed

Getting named as a co-chair of Anna Wintour’s prestigious Met Gala is considered an honor for a celebrity with an agenda to push, but after careful investigation, we’ve found it might also be a curse.

For the past five years, at least one of the Met Gala’s celeb co-chairs has gone on to suffer a minor-to-major career setback in the months following the first Monday in May.

As far as we can tell, the curse started in 2012, roughly a year after Anna Wintour decided that the best way to raise the profile of the Met Gala would be to let celebs start co-chairing the event.

Previously, that job had just been for fashion insiders and designers, which makes sense, but doesn’t exactly make headlines.

That year the celebrity co-chairs were Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, and actress Carey Mulligan.

While Jeff Bezos emerged unharmed, the Met Gala curse struck Carey Mulligan hard.

Premiering on the same day as the Met Gala, Carey’s much-buzzed about film “The Great Gatsby” was universally panned for being the worst. Later that month, Carey’s next film “Inside Llewyn Davis” came out to positive reviews, but Carey failed to win a single acting nomination for her role in it.

Rough.

In 2013, Beyoncé and Rooney Mara were honored as Anna Wintour’s celebrity co-chairs.

While Beyoncé went on to surprise release an album and stop the world, Rooney Mara’s next movie, “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints,” failed to break even after grossing only $1 million at the box office.

And in 2014, things really got dire when Bradley Cooper and Oscar De La Renta did the honors.

Bradley Cooper didn’t win an Oscar for his much-hyped role in American Sniper and iconic designer Oscar De La Renta actually died a few months later.

See? We told you it was dire.

From there, the Met Gala curse started to get progressively worse.

In 2015, Jennifer Lawrence and Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer hosted the event. Shortly after, the world decided it was time to start universally hating Jennifer Lawrence, a phase we’re still in, and Marissa Mayer’s reputation started to deteriorate.

While in 2014, Marissa was ranked as the 16th most-powerful businesswoman in the world by Fortune, by 2015 Yahoo!’s stock fell over 30%. In January of 2016, people were estimating Yahoo!’s core business was actually worth less than zero dollars, and had been for a while.

But nothing tops Taylor Swift’s fall from grace.

In 2016, Taylor kicked off the beginning of the end of her stint as America’s sweetheart at the Met Gala.

Although plenty of people had begun to publicly despise Taylor, in retrospect things didn’t really start to go south for her until after she co-chaired the Met Gala in 2016 and met the man who did her reputation zero favors, Tom Hiddleston.

From their first staged paparazzi picture on a rock to the rumors Taylor broke up with him because he was too much of a publicity whore, their relationship was universally ridiculed.

After that Taylor topped off 2016 by getting exposed as a liar, liar pants on fire by Kim Kardashian and was ultimately done in by her unwillingness to speak out against Trump.

That decision got Taylor so much bad press she decided to go into hiding, where she’s supposedly working on a new album to make the world forgive her again.

Now, you might say this is all just one big coincidence, but if we were 2016 co-host Katy Perry, we’d probably be feeling pretty nervous right about now.

Katy’s still in the process of launching her new “woke” persona, and already she’s run into a few snags.

Although on the plus side, at least if her next album’s a total flop or she gets herself tied up in a big controversy, Katy can say it’s not her fault, it’s just the Met Gala curse.

Sorry Anna.
