Captain Cuts Crosses Fetty Wap and Blink 182 and Makes Magic

Captain Cuts may not be a familiar name to you just yet, but what you haven’t realized is that you’ve probably already heard their work as songwriters/producers on a multitude of tunes from Tove Lo, to Halsey, to R5. You may have even also heard their remixes of Britney Spears, Imagine Dragons, or Ellie Goulding.

The trio, made up of Ben Berger, Ryan McMahon, and Ryan Rabin first starting writing together as a joke, but then built a name for themselves as producers and became well-known for their unexpected pairings and mashups of pop hits with emo classics at Emo Night LA.

They’ve also been known to hack sounds from Guitar Hero and Rock Band (something they feel makes them super dorks) but they’ve also crossed Fetty Wap and Blink 182, Drake and Say Anything, Justin Bieber and Fall Out Boy; and basically turned them into a thing of beauty.

So if this was a joke, the joke’s on them, and surely these dudes are probably laughing extra hard now that they’ve been signed as artists, and have just released their new single, “Love Like We Used To” featuring Nateur.

So check the new single below and the hilarious Q&A with the dudes themselves!

Who are some of your influences?

Our parents grew up listening to a lot of Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach. Not sure if it comes across in our music.

If you were to describe your sound, like Cyndi Lauper meets guitar metal, what would it be?

Wow. Cyndi Lauper meets guitar metal is pretty close. We like to call our sound “Retro Future.” We want to lay down classic feeling songs on top of a futuristic bed and make sweet love to them.

If “Love Like We Used To” was on a movie soundtrack, set to a specific scene maybe, what would it be and why?

The dance scene in Ex Machina:

What bands/music are you listening to right now?

Loving the new Porter Robinson/Madeon song, “Shelter.” The new Bruno Mars song, “24k Magic” is amazing. The Snakehips ft. Zayn song, “Cruel.”

You’ve worked with damn near everyone in the music industry – is there anyone left you’d like to work with now that you are the artists?

We think the only thing left now for us to do is get a presidential feature on one of our songs. We put calls in to every living US president. Bill Clinton is the only one who got back to us.

What are you most looking forward to now that you are the artists instead of behind the curtain?

We’ve been writing and producing with other artists for the last six years, so this all new. We never expected this artist project to happen. We literally have no idea what we’re doing. Yesterday we showed up to a photoshoot with fifty gold chains and a tiny dog. Seriously.

You guys are known for your DJ sets at emo night. Give us a picture of what that’s like, for anyone who hasn’t been. What kind of music do you play? What is the vibe like? Etc.

Here’s what happened after the last Emo Night:

As for what we play, we put out a mixtape of mashups and remixes we made using old emo songs and current pop/dance songs.

Of the mixes you’ve done for other artists – which have been your favorites? Which were the most difficult? Were there any you thought you’d never finish?

We don’t have a favorite…they’re all our babies in different ways. We have a song with Bebe Rexha coming out very soon that we love. We went through 20 different versions before we all found the right sound and now that it’s finally done, it makes that long process all the more rewarding. The label even took us out for ice cream.

Have you ever done anything using your musical abilities to convince a girl to go out with you?

We’ve never convinced a girl to go out with any of us 🙁

What do you hope to accomplish this year?

We hope to beat level 76 of Candy Crush.

Where do you think you’ll be in a year?

Level 77 of Candy Crush.

We’re impatient. When will there be a full album?

No concrete plans to release an album anytime soon. We like the idea of releasing our favorite song we’ve written every few months.

What’s next for you? How can we hear more stuff from you?

We DJ at Emo Nite at the Echoplex the first Tuesday of every month. Next one is November 1st. Other than that, stay tuned.

How can we stalk you?
