Selena Went Insta Official With the Weeknd, Then Changed Her Mind & Deleted It

In some non-political news, Selena Gomez went Instagram official with The Weeknd this morning, and around an hour later, she changed her mind and deleted it.

Awkward.

At 7:27 in the morning, I saw that Selena Gomez had posted a black and white video of Abel sitting on a boat, with his sunglasses on and his hoodie up on her Instagram.

After all the paparazzi coverage of their vacation in Florence, I expected something like this was coming, but I what I didn’t expect was what happened next.

By 8:52, Selena had deleted the video.

Of course, thanks to the wonder of the Internet, the video still exists online, although admittedly, it’s not a great video to begin with.

In the now deleted video, Abel sits there while Selena can be heard having a conversation in the background with an unidentified foreign woman.

“Okay,” Selena says.

“Okay?” the unidentified foreign woman responds.

“We’ll figure it out, I guess,” Selena counters with a hint of exasperation.

“Exactly, that’s —” Selena’s foreign confidant begins, before getting unceremoniously cut off.

And that’s it.

It’s honestly not even clear why Abel’s in the video at all except to prove he was in the same place at the same time as Selena.

While Selena has yet to explain why she deleted the video, I bet it has something to do with what she posted next: her first political statement in the wake of Trump’s already disastrously overreaching mess of a presidency.

Selena posted a quote attributed to Ashton Kutcher’s SAG speech on Sunday night, which she reposted from Refinery 29:

“Everyone in airports that belongs in my America: You are the part of the fabric of who we are, and we love you and we welcome you.”

In light of everything that went down this weekend, we’re guessing Selena’s PR department wisely advised their client that making her new relationship Instagram official maybe shouldn’t be her highest priority.

And it maybe even made the political statement she posted a little bit later look like an afterthought.

If there’s anybody who needs to distance herself from Taylor Swift’s non-activism, it’s Selena.

Nothing derails a comeback like being on the wrong side of history.

UPDATE:

The Weeknd has now posted the same video Selena deleted, albeit without sound, on his Instagram story.

Good luck, lovebirds.
