Why Kendall’s New Adidas Deal Is Low Key Dramatic
On Wednesday afternoon Kendall Jenner announced that surprise surprise, she was officially joining the Adidas family.
While models and celebrities become brand ambassadors all the darn time, there was a surprising amount of drama surrounding this particular announcement.
Posing in front of a mural that might have been painted just for her, Kendall had a shit-eating grin plastered over her alabaster skin — most likely because she knew she was about to stir up the drama.
Taylor Swift Drama
Even though the Kardashians are personae non gratae as far as Taylor Swift’s concerned, some of Tay’s BFFs are close with Kendall too. Like Karlie Kloss.
Shortly after Kendall announced her Adidas partnership, Karlie posted a picture of the two of them on Instagram saying, “welcome to the fam.”
And it wasn’t your average run of the mill promotional photo, it was a selfie taken back in 2016 when chokers weren’t basic yet.
Although it’s just as likely that Karlie was contractually obligated to welcome Kendall to the family with a candid photo that “proves” they hang out. Even though there’s no real proof that they’ve hung out outside of work more than that one time they randomly went to a Lakers game together.
Still, there’s no clause in the Taylor Swift BFF handbook that says you can’t be photographed hanging out, but whether or not Karlie and Kendall are actually friends, you know this selfie has to irk Taylor just a little bit.
And honestly, why wouldn’t it? Nobody really likes it when their friend hangs out with somebody they have beef with.
Karlie has tweeted about her undying loyalty to T Swift, saying “Taylor has always had my back and I will always have hers,” but having friends who hate each other is always a recipe for drama. Even if it’s the kind that’s always simmering below the surface and never bubbles up over the pot.
Taylor is the queen of pettyness, and you have to imagine that Karlie’s stock went down every so slightly in her eyes after this.

What’s the one thing the Kardashians have in common with the mafia? Well, one of the things?
They’re all about the family.
And while there are lots of brands the Kardashian-Jenner fam supports, their Adidas love runs deep. Mostly because of Kanye, whose Yeezy imprint is made by Adidas.
Not that that stopped Kylie from inking her own deal with Puma last year.
As you might expect, Kanye was kind of pissed about the Kylie x Puma situation.
He tweeted, “1000% there will never be a Kylie Puma anything. That’s on my family! 1000% Kylie is on Yeezy team!!!” And he also said, “Puma we gone give you your measly million dollars back!!! Never try to divide the family!!!”
But we all know how that went.
Kylie quickly became a Puma girl, although she allegedly made sure to add a stipulation in her contract saying she could wear Yeezys whenever wherever.
Whether or not Kanye stayed pissed off about this, by signing with Adidas, Kendall proved her willingness to toe the family line and not rock the boat.
And given all of Kanye’s mental health problems and the fact that Pepsigate just happened two months ago, you can’t blame Kendall for wanting to keep the drama to a minimum.
Like we mentioned, it’s only been two months since Pepsigate, which everybody assumed would derail Kendall’s career for a couple of months.
Only it didn’t. At all.
Maybe it’s because people hated on her so hard after the ad was released that they just got it out of their systems, but people got over it almost immediately — not least because of the United Airlines scandal that dominated the news cycle shortly after.
Still, given Kendall’s Adidas connections, you have to assume this ambassadorship has been in the works for a while now. If you believe in conspiracy theories, you might even go so far as to believe Kendall’s had her Adidas gig lined up since 2016, and that’s the only reason why she and Karlie went out to that basketball game: to be seen together and take the selfie Karlie used to congratulate Kendall.
After all, Karlie’s been working with Adidas since 2016. So is it even that crazy of a theory?
Plus, regardless of whether or not that conspiracy theory is true, you also have to assume that Adidas wanted to delay announcing their partnership with Kendall until they were sure people wouldn’t drag them for it.
And what would you know, their gamble paid off.
Don’t you wish all brand partnerships could be this interesting?
