Lorde Confirmed Her New Song’s About Her Ex
Lorde is back people and with her return she’s brought us a brand new breakup anthem — and now, we’re pretty sure we know which dude inspired it.
The 20-year-old singer opened up to Zane Lowe in a Beats 1 interview about her new single, “Green Light,” where she took inspiration from her breakup with longtime boyfriend James Lowe — yes, the guy from those viral beach pics.
“The song is actually about a heartbreak,” Lorde said in the interview. “And it’s not something that I really am used to writing about. It took me a while to be able to figure out how to write about that. It was my first major heartbreak.”

Reports claim Lorde and James split at the end of 2015 and while “Greenlight” is a dance-party ready tune, it channels the pain of adjusting to life post-breakup. Lorde says the reason the song is so upbeat is because it portrays “that drunk girl at the party dancing around crying about her ex-boyfriend who everyone thinks is a mess. That’s her tonight and tomorrow she starts to rebuild. And that’s the song for me.” Vibes.

Earlier this week, Lorde took the “green light” them super seriously and promoted the single with things like a car flashing a green strobe light, a green-lit wall playing a clip of the song, and some lyrics displayed on a green sign as green drones hovered above. Her highly anticipated second album is also expected to drop sometime in the near future and is expected to capture “the last 2 wild florescent years of [her] life”.
