The 8 Most Relevant Drinks of 2016
2016 was a shit show.
We all needed a drink, or seven, to get over some of the ridiculous, depressing, and surreal (the 2016 word of the year) stuff that went down in the past 12 months.
But we didn’t always turn to alcohol. I mean usually, but not always. Here are some of the most relevant drinks of 2016.
1. Lemonade
Thanks to Beyonce, the lemon emoji got the most action it’s ever seen in its life. The reason behind Bey’s album title was the classic phrase, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” And suddenly, everyone was hashtagging the sugar-y drank.
2. Rihanna’s Wine Glass
Rihanna’s best accessory for the year? Her to-go glass of wine. Because when you’re Rihanna, you don’t have to worry about open container laws.
3. 1738 Remy Martin
Okay, Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen” actually came out in 2015, but considering that he sings about the Remy Martin cognac in many of his songs, as it’s the name of his squad, we figure it’s still pretty relevant in 2016.
4. Matcha
Matcha is essentially green tea on steroids, which is great for someone who’s trying to get off coffee but still needs caffeine injections on the daily. But Matcha’s real popularity is mostly about it’s cutesy green color, which looks great on Instagram and in shot glasses for healthy fashion week parties. Is it actually that healthy for you? It’s debatable, but hey, you keep telling yourself that.
5. Pumpkin Spice Lattes
Call girls basic all you will, but Pumpkin Spice Lattes aren’t going anywhere. Instead, pumpkin spice is making it’s way into highlighters, french fries, and other ridiculous things nobody needed.
6. Any Drink From Starbucks
Starbucks should really pay royalties to whoever decided that carrying around a white and green overpriced coffee was trendy, because whether you love or hate them, chances are you’re making them more famous.
7. Tea
Sure, it was cool to drink tea in 2016, even if it wasn’t matcha. But what everyone was really doing – or saying that they were doing, was “sipping tea.” If they weren’t sipping tea, Kermit was. It’s difficult to explain this phenomenon to your older relative who asks you about it over Christmas dinner, but if you’re reading this, I’m sure you already know what’s up.
8. Kombucha
Another tea-related product, this fermented tea product is also revered for its alleged health benefits. We’re not sure if the alcoholic versions are quite as healthy, but we can all agree that they’re fucking delicious.
