Thomas Newson On How To Date a Famous DJ

At the ripe age of 22, Thomas Newson is well on his way to establishing his own EDM empire like many others from Holland, his home country, have before. His name became recognized in 2014 when Hardwell recognizing Newson’s potential and subsequently signing his single to Revealed Recordings. Since then, Newson has been touring the world, making a stop at Tomorrowland’s 10th Anniversary festival, and venturing into Asia in 2015.

We spoke to Thomas Newson about his rise to fame, festival sex, and how to win over a famous DJ by remaining calm and not being a fan girl.

Your first major hit was through the support of Hardwell recognizing your potential, what did it feel like to be noticed by such a big DJ?

I think when a famous DJ recognizes your potential on his own, that’s a dream comes true! As a young producer, the only dream you have is that one day you will be as big as your “DJ idol.” In my case, it was Hardwell that I looked up to, so if he plays a song that I made at a festival, like Tomorrowland, it’s an awesome feeling!

So many DJs come from the Netherlands, why do you think that is?

Actually I have no idea why that is, but what I do know is that the Netherlands is a really developed country music-wise. Maybe that’s why there are so many DJs and also a load of new DJs coming through.

What’s the favorite place that you’ve traveled to so far? Why?

I think Tokyo was one of my favorite places that I’ve been to. The reason is because Tokyo has such a different culture to where I live, so I really like the contrast with the culture of my own country.

Tomorrowland is one of the biggest EDM festivals of all time, what was it like to play that festival? How did you prepare yourself?

Playing at Tomorrowland is the best thing that can happen to you as a DJ, I think. For me, it was a huge dream that came true. Because after all, playing at an event like Tomorrowland is the only thing you think about as a relatively young DJ/Producer.

What’s the sexiest thing a girl can wear to a festival?

I think a girl can dress really sexy in a short top and something like hot-pants, but for me it has to stay a bit classy I think.

Would you ever have festival sex? Why or why not?

I don’t think I’ll ever have sex at a festival. I know how big the parties can be, but it is my job and I think you have to separate the two things. But, after the festival when I’m done working… Why not? After all we’re all humans, right?

What advice do you have for girls who want to date a DJ?

Just be yourself. The DJ’s I know, including me, don’t like it when girls don’t act how they normally would when they are around famous people. I think that’s the best way to finally get a long term relationship if you are both into it.

What song should Galore add to our sex playlist?

“Too Good,” Drake feat. Rihanna

What’s the weirdest DM you’ve ever gotten?

I have received so much crazy shit via DM. But yeah, sometimes [people] send nudes [laughing].

How should a girl make the first move on you?

Just don’t start talking about me, my music, or my DJ career. I really like it if they can talk about normal things and not work.

What’s the sexiest thing a girl can say?

“I want you so bad.”

What’s your favorite studio snack?

I actually really like the Dutch “stroopwafels.” If I take one, I can’t stop myself eating them all.
