10 Things You Missed At Chanel’s #CocoCuba Cruise Show
Karl Lagerfeld brought Chanel, the iconic French fashion house, into Havana, Cuba to stage a fashion show on El Paseo del Prado with 600 editors, celebs, and VIPs in attendance. Guests included Tilda Swinton, Vanessa Paradis, and Gisele Bündchen to name a few, alongside an array of Cuban artists and local cultural figures.
Chanel shared the invite to their 2017 show on Twitter just a few days ago, promoting the hashtag for the event — #CocoCuba. Cuba hasn’t hosted an event for a luxury brand since the ’50s, which is why Chanel’s show, featuring glittering gowns, tulle cocktail dresses and models in Panama hats smoking cigars, has been deemed as “culturally significant.” Here’s everything you missed.
1. Chanel’s favorite supermodel faces walked the show.
Stella Tennant, Lindsey Wixson, Baptiste Giabiconi, and Sébastien Jondeau were just a few of the models who made it to Cuba.
2. The show took place on Havana’s infamous Paseo del Prado.
Paseo del Prado’s colorful backdrop complimented the runway clothes perfectly.
3. Vibrant color is the new black… maybe.
Chanel released this statement in a press release: “The palette is inspired by the vibrant baroque facades of the old town: yellow, pink, orange, turquoise, bright green burst and sparkle over the marvelous sequined and embroidered short little dresses, the chasuble-dresses in coral orange embroidered tweed. The same chromatic affirmation goes for the strapless dresses in sequins, with puffed sleeves, with fringes and feathers. The tobacco and Havana tones are reminiscent of the Cuban Picasso, Wifredo Lam. The blacks and the whites are shadowy, cloudy, smoky.”
4. A few models could be seen in “Coco Cuba” t-shirts.
So, now Cuba and Chanel are besties.
5. Models wore black beret hats as a nod to Cuba’s history.
The “sequined black berets irreverently evoked ‘Commander’ Che Guevara,” according to Chanel’s press release.
6. Gisele Bündchen sat front row.
As any retired supermodel would.
7. Guests arrived in vintage cars.
Incase you don’t know, Cuba has the coolest cars from the ’50s EVER. Chanel chose the candy-colored ones, obviously.
8. Hudson Kroenig closed the show.
