Yaris Sanchez talks fashion and empowerment
Yaris Sanchez is getting ready to take on the film and video world and nothing can stop her.
Born in the Dominican Republic, Sanchez moved to New York city at the age of three, and has without a doubt made a name for herself. Breaking out onto the scene as the showstopper in A-list rappers music videos, Sanchez has experienced what it’s like to be in front of and behind the camera. She’s taken everything she’s learned and channeled it into positive outlets, creating her own artistic career that is taking off.
Sanchez has defied all expectations. She likes to express herself through her personal style and is continuing to pursue her passion for acting and film each and every day.
What are some of the things that make you feel empowered?
Clothing makes me feel empowered, it’s how I express myself everyday. It represents a mood, a thought, a story that I’m carrying. Also, tools such as social media for expression, and a camera to capture moment and selfies that also tell a story. Music and traveling also make me feel empowered.

From personal interests to fashion sense, how did you start comfortably owning who you are?
It all began with me taking ownership of my mind and body. I decided to listen to myself, and always follow my highest excitements because that always leads to happiness and that was always the goal for me. Once I started making myself happy, which believe me, it’s a work in progress as every day you grow and learn, but that led to self love which in turn led to confidence.

In what ways has social served as a platform to express yourself?
Social media has served as a platform in my journey to self-expression in so many ways. Each platform is my own space and has given me the ability to find people that share my interests and that really fuck with me for what I have to say or even for simply being me which is a blessing. It’s very liberating, and although at times there’s people that aren’t so nice with their opinions, it gives me an opportunity to accept, be open and compassionate towards others as well. We all deserve to be heard.
What are some of your favorite places to shop?
I love thrifting, it’s honestly how I find all my unique pieces. Thrift stores such as Salvation Army, Beacon’s Closet, and every time I travel out the state or country I shop at thrift stores and come back home with so many amazing gems.

What does sexy mean to you?
Being sexy to me is a state of mind, a feeling. It’s the amount of love you have for yourself and the world. It’s being kind, warm, and charming all of that to me translates into pure sexiness. Topping all that off with a cute outfit is extra sexy points lol.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from firstly, myself, my story, my culture, and my background. Latinas have a lot of sass, flare and personality. Movies such as Mulholland Drive, Gummo, Girl Interrupted, and Clockwork Orange are all aesthetically pleasing. Carrie Bradshaw, Gwen Stefani, and Bettie Page will forever be style inspirations.

What’s one essential item in your closet that every girl should also have?
Lots and lots of cute purses. You can’t ever have just one, a good purse to match every look you want to nail will complete it.
If you had to choose an era of style to wear for the rest of your life which one would it be?
This is tough because I love mixing eras together when I dress up at times. But honestly I think late 90’s and early 2000’s would be my pick.
What projects should we be on the look out for the upcoming year?
I’m still working on my short films as I continue studying acting and film. I’d like to put out film content regularly to show everyone my range. I recently started writing and will launch a blog very soon sharing my thoughts on certain relatable topics. I’m still working on my photo book along with photographer and BFF Cheril Sanchez, we have been collecting photos for a few years now, so I’m excited to put it together when the moment feels right. Lastly, working on an online store, but I’ll have more info on that once it’s developed more.
