Premiere: Bird Call Shares “Pray To The Unknown” Single + Video
Today, Bird Call, the nom de plume of Guatemalan/Italian art pop artist Chiara Angelicola, release their new single and video “Pray To The Unknown”. Bird Call’s sound has been known to have a mercurial presence, always evolving, yet remaining rooted in a foundation of punchy lyrics.
Chiara Angelicola says ““Pray to the Unknown” is an uplifting story for me about the triumphs I’ve experienced in the past five years. After recovering from OCD, experiencing post partum depression after giving birth to my daughter in 2022, and creating this new record, I want to celebrate the strength and community it takes to become an embodied creative woman after birth and through motherhood.
There’s so much about parenting that no one advocates for on a systemic level, especially post partum care, often leading so many women to feel a sense of isolation and many to severe complications. The video for Pray to the Unknown is my ode to all mother figures and I aim to shed light on pressing data most people don’t know about the 18 plus months after giving birth, what happens to the woman’s psyche, body, and spirit. It’s the most miraculous and psychedelic experience I’ve ever had and ultimately I could not have walked through it successfully without the patchwork support of other mother figures, family, and friends in my life.“
FEATURE INTERVIEW:
What inspired the creation of “Pray To The Unknown”? Are there any personal experiences or stories behind the song?
Pray to the Unknown is an uplifting song for me about the triumphs I’ve experienced as a new mother. After recovering from postpartum depression and anxiety after giving birth to my daughter in 2022, I wanted to celebrate the strength and community it takes to become an embodied creative woman after birth and through motherhood.
There’s so much about parenting that no one advocates for on a systemic level, especially postpartum care, often leading so many women to feel a sense of isolation and many to severe complications. The song and music video for Pray to the Unknown are my ode to all mother figures and I aim to shed light on pressing data most people don’t know about the 18+ months after giving birth, what happens to the woman’s psyche, body, and spirit. Birth and motherhood are the most miraculous and psychedelic things I’ve ever experienced. I love Elizabeth Stone’s quote about motherhood, “It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body. ” Ultimately, I could not be walking through this successfully without the patchwork support of other mother figures, family, and friends in my life.
What kind of visual style or aesthetic did you aim for in the video?
My partner, Martín Yernazian, directed the video for Pray to the Unknown. I knew that the main theme was to raise awareness about 4th trimester statistics and offer resources to mothers in need. So, we thought it would make more of an impact to subtract from the aesthetic and make it as simple as possible. We thought black and white, Italian blow out, simple make-up, almost like a classic Calvin Klein or Gap add from the 90’s would get viewers to look for the symbolism and pay attention to the cue cards.
We also knew that having our daughter in the video was important as she is indubitably a part of the story of this song. I hope one day rather than resent me for contravening our agreement to protect her virtual identity, she will value the bravery it takes to talk about the things mothers don’t often talk about and she will see reflected back at her the miraculous medicine of love through which all pain can be healed.
How does this project set the stage for your future work? Are there any new directions you’re excited to explore?
I feel like turning 40, being a mother, and having 20 years of working experience in the music industry sort of gives me a wild card, creatively. I don’t feel beholden to anyone’s expectations or the genre trends of the summer and spotify playlists. I ultimately feel so much freedom to lean into more honest, vulnerable work the way I have leaned in for this new record, The Life is Extraordinary.
I’m excited to continue my practice through self-awareness and just continuing to keep my artistic integrity in alignment with who I really am. Motherhood has brought forth an expansive creative energy for me to explore, and I just want to keep staying curious about that.
