FEATURED INTERVIEW:

Your Republic Records Debut is here! Can you tell us a little bit about Electric Honey

Yes! So, Electric Honey is essentially this merging of my inner worlds. It’s the potent, powerful, tense side of me interwoven with a soft, luminous sweetness that transcends genres and limits. It’s been one of my favorite EPs to work on because I got to collaborate with some incredible creatives and really see and feel love translated sonically.

Do you have a favorite track from the record?

Honestly, it’s constantly changing. Every song has fallen into the favorites category, depending on the day.

We love a good collab! How did your collaborations with Sabrina Claudio and Foggieraw come about?

Sabrina and I had met and had some of our first sessions last year and I really enjoyed our creative chemistry. I’m really precious about who I write with if I’m writing with anyone and it came really easy with her, zero ego in the room, just a lot of love. With Foggie I reached out & asked if he’d bless “Gentle.” I’ve been a big big fan for a minute. His music reminds me of the type of hip hop I grew up listening to, nostalgic, real. I’m still screaming at the fact that we have this song together. I’m really honored to be able to create with such gifted people.

We loved seeing you on tour with Jojo! Can fans expect to see you anytime soon?

Thank you! Still a core memory to this day. Yes, sooner than they think!

Imagery is essential for you; you’ve used it to express many emotions. What inspires you when creating visuals?

I like to think of what’s visceral, what can be felt, what colors, what textures, and what tells a story, and I love creating with others who think that way.

You’ve modeled for years and worked countless times with my girl, Sasha Samsonova. Is that something you’d still be interested in now that you’re supported by a major label?

Sasha is one of my favorite people. Such a brilliant mind. I’m hoping to act in something she directs someday. As far as modeling I’d really love to work as an ambassador for some of my favorite brands if the opportunity ever presents itself.

Growing up, was music something you always felt inside you that you wanted to do?

Absolutely. My mother was heavy into music. She had these CD books that she’d organize alphabetically with the covers in the same slot as the CD. It was like a little sonic library, and I’d sneak into them and listen to EVERYTHING. Along with film, music was my safe space.

What are some of your musical inspirations?

Growing up listening to any and everything, it’s such an impossible list to name only a few, but some are: Sade, Des’ree, Coldplay, The XX, Florence + The Machine, Beyoncé, Solange, TLC, Toni Braxton, Brandy, Arctic Monkeys, Purity Ring, Paramore, Lady Gaga, there are so so many.

Is there a sound that you want to try in the future?

I’d love to do an ambient album someday that sounds like a score to a movie that doesn’t exist. I’d also love to make an Alt-Rock album with songs featuring all my favorite bands.

What does self-care look like for you?

Self-care looks like being honest with myself. Honoring when I’m not feeling the best but not letting myself sulk for too long. Prioritizing my peace, establishing boundaries and enforcing them. Doing things i love like going to the movies, taking rides to the beach, hanging with loved ones. Eating food I love and not being hard on myself about it, working out, taking on new hobbies and not quitting if I’m not perfect right away, having intentional play & fun. Self-care for me is staying on top of my therapy, and giving myself the same grace and compassion that I give to everyone else & not being so serious all the time.

What’s on your current playlist right now?

I have a trillion playlist but I think my lil playlist I have going right now is Doechii Alter Ego, Good Girl Luck Down, Pearly Drops Bloom for Me, Sade, Saya Gray Annie, Pick me a Flower (My House), Sabrina Carpenter Please Please Please, Lil Yachty Strike (Holster), OutKast etc etc etc.

Do you have a signature fragrance?

I do!! I am an avid fragrance collector and I love making little custom oils as well. I get so excited to make new combinations and see peoples reactions to them.

What are some of your go-to beauty products?

Hmmm, Fenty Cherry Lip Oil, makeup forever dark dimensional liner, black girl sunscreen & a Loewe fragrance.

How do you feel your creativity is disrupting the culture?

As a queer black woman, I feel like painting myself outside of the boxes built for me since birth is the best type of disruption & liberation and I embrace it to the fullest. I don’t believe in limits and my art is a testament to that. Showing the world that black people have more to our stories than just trauma…showing the world that our joys, our curiosities, our triumphs, our adventure, our LOVE, is just as healing, impactful, necessary and important to our history, that’s what I’m here to do.

2024 will be the year of…..

Divinity, abundance & dreams coming true.
