Ross and Rocky Lynch of The Driver Era are about to be your newest obsession
Ross and Rocky Lynch walk into the hotel room dressed exactly how I expect them to – think 90s grunge mixed with California skater with a tinge of “I’m not so sure where I even got this shirt.” Ross is wearing chucks and an old, white t-shirt, and Rocky is wearing black, skinny jeans paired with some well-loved leather shoes.
When you first meet these brothers, it doesn’t feel like they’re strangers. They both automatically engage in honest and real conversation that makes you feel like maybe they’re old friends.
You probably know Ross from his time as the character Austin in the Disney Channel show, “Austin & Ally.” While it was his big breakout role, it certainly isn’t his only impressive performance. He recently starred as Jeffrey Dahmer in the chillingly realistic portrayal of the killer’s childhood in “My Friend Dahmer.”
He says that he wants to play a ‘Heath Ledger character’ and praises Ledger’s Joker portrayal – meaning, he wants to play a lovable villain. The best part is? He pretty much already did that in “My Friend Dahmer,” which brought him into the spotlight once again.

The movie may even feel documentary-like because of how truthful Ross’ depiction is. You may just leave the theatre with, maybe not a soft spot for Jeffrey Dahmer himself, but a soft spot for his terrible and concerning upbringing.
Ross is now officially cast as Harvey Kinkle in the new “Sabrina The Teenage Witch” spin-off, “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” created by Netflix. The show is a darker, creepier version of the original series, hence Ross’ new brunette dye job.
Ross has also always been musically inclined, and it seems that music runs through the Lynch veins. Him and his brother, Rocky, were involved in a band called R5, along with a few other family members (basically a family band). Rocky actually is the one who taught himself and his brothers how to play the guitar.
R5 was Disney-pop, and people still eat up their songs to this day – who doesn’t love a bouncey beat underneath the lyrics, “Let’s not be alone tonight.” While we’re all suckers for some good old Disney-pop (yes, all), there comes a point when artists grow, and therefore their music must, too.
That’s when The Driver Era, Ross and Rocky Lynch’s new music duo, came about. Out with the censored, can’t-even-say-the-word-damn pop songs, in with the sexy, dirty, alternative hits.

You may be thinking, “who?” That’s because they have only officially released one song. After a few singles releases, though, I wouldn’t be surprised if The Driver Era immediately became everyone’s newest obsession. Their debut single, “Preacher Man,” is an angsty anthem about staying out past 6am and wondering wtf you’re doing in life (and I know me and half of LA have been there).
Their debut music video for their single, “Preacher Man,” is a cool, lusty, almost drunken stumble of a scene, and it will have you realizing that Ross and Rocky are finally being able to act their age. In that moody motel room with these gorgeous, unique women, maybe these men have found themselves.
The Driver Era is also going to be having their first official performance at Galore’s Coachella Weekend 1 party, and we couldn’t be more excited to have them. The duo’s music is perfect for those hot, Palm Springs nights.
We sit down with Ross and Rocky of The Driver Era to discuss their new venture, old Disney shenanigans, Heath Ledger, good sex, the tired LA scene, and more.
Check it out below.
How did you study and prep for “My Friend Dahmer?”
Ross actually starts choking on his water, so Rocky chimes in.
Rocky: Killed a couple people.
Ross: So many people probably want me to say that. [coughing] Sorry, that just went down the wrong pipe. It was a really interesting process for me because I was coming off of a film – my schedule was pretty crazy, because I went from tour to a film to “A Chorus Line” at the Hollywood Bowl to Jeffrey Dahmer. I went from my musician self to my teenage, charismatic self, to my ballet self, to then my serial killer self. That range of places to go was really interesting and it all happened back to back.
I was researching Jeffrey Dahmer and his childhood and all of the things he did – there’s extensive video content where he explains what he did and why he did it and where it all started for him. He talks about the time of his life that I portrayed pretty extensively. While I was doing all of these other projects I was researching Jeffrey Dahmer at night. In the back of my head, I was hoping that Jeffrey Dahmer’s not influencing all of these other characters that I’m playing, y’know?

It was mainly about getting to know what his struggles were at that age and what led him to do the things he did in his own brain. Then, also going back and looking at the actual story of what happened and talking to the people who actually grew up with him. Then, y’know, getting on set, getting into character, getting in his clothes, living at his house, and just shooting film.
So you lived at the house?
Ross: Well, I didn’t live at the house, but we shot at the house almost every day.
So you lived at the house.
Ross: Basically.
Rocky: You guys should’ve done that. Gotten sleeping bags together and stayed there.
Ross: But most of the crew was terrified. Like, not me, because I was in a certain headspace that Jeffrey Dahmer wasn’t a villain to me. But a lot of the crew, every time they would walk on set, they were walking on eggshells a little bit.
Did playing Dahmer affect you afterwards?
Ross: Mhm. I think so. Even some of my family said that it took me a while when I got back to be like, social again. I just remember being kind of closed off. And you can’t even completely blame it on playing that extreme of a character. It’s just sort of like, being in that situation, working every day, working extensive hours, and then coming back home and it’s a completely different dynamic. There’s a lot of things that can influence different behavior. But, I do think it took me a second to come out of it.

There’s kind of a taboo about Disney stars transitioning post-Disney. How do you think you’re doing?
Ross: [laughs] How do I think I’m doing? The thing is, I think that people pay way too much attention to this whole thing. I think when you pay too much attention; it brings even more attention to it. For me –
Rocky: I think you’re killing it.
Ross: Well, thank you. But, there’s definitely been times where I’ve thought, “Oh man, maybe this content or this song would be more appreciated had people not had that stigma.” And I’ve thought that for sure. But, I don’t really think about that. I just try to make the best work that I can, and then so far it’s working out. Things are going well for me.
What kind of role are you dying to do?
Ross: I really like the whole Heath Ledger thing. I’m just a massive fan. When you can bring a role – I’m referencing the Joker, now. Rocky and I were talking about this the other day, but the Joker in that film is probably the greatest villain that’s ever been captured. He does it in such a way where he’s crazy and deranged, but everyone loves the Joker! How do you do that? You’re supposed to like, hate him.
I think Michael B. Jordan also did a really good job in Black Panther of being this sort of like –
Rocky: He’s a likable villain.
Ross: I know he’s the bad guy, but I know why he’s doing this! I feel for him. But, I like those roles. And I think that’s what Jeffrey Dahmer was. A guy where you’re like, I’m not supposed to like you, but I feel for you.
Would you rather star in a comedy or a horror film?
Ross: Um. Well, I’ve not starred in a horror film yet, so maybe horror. That’s what I’m all about. I’m all about just doing different and new stuff.
What can you tell us about your new do’ and your new role?
Ross and Rocky: [laugh] New doooooo!
Ross: I had to dye my hair to play the character Harvey Kinkle in “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” and it’s taking me a little while to get used to, I’ll be honest with you [laughs]. Sabrina’s a blonde, so for me to be blonde, they didn’t want us to look like siblings. And it makes sense, and it looks really good on the show, anyway, because it’s a lot darker. It’s looking really, really good.

What’s your favorite part about filming in Vancouver?
Ross: I actually filmed a movie up in Vancouver called “Status Update,” (out now) so I was already pretty familiar with the area. But, it’s fun. We were just hanging out with the “Riverdale” cast and they were all really cool. Having a good time.
Most embarrassing Disney moment?
Rocky: Oh, I got one.
Ross: Uh oh.
Rocky: Seriously. It’s really amazing.
Tell us!
Rocky: But, I don’t know if I can share it.
Well, now you have to!
Rocky: Ok. So, we’re at –
Ross: What is it?!
Rocky: – Disney World. This is a couple years back.
Ross: Oh, shit. Is this bad?
Rocky: No, it’s amazing.
Ross: Oh, oh yeah! [laughs] Yeah, dude, go for it!
Rocky: So we’re at one of the hotels, and we’re all ordering drinks. Ross orders a drink, but he uses my older brother’s ID.
Ross: They like, sat me down.
Rocky: The guy looks at the ID and leaves, and then he comes back –
Ross: – with the manager! [laughs]
Rocky: So at this point we’re like, this is definitely going south.
Ross: They knew exactly who I was.
Rocky: They were like, “We know this isn’t your ID.”
Ross: Well, they came up to me and go, “Hey Ross, can we see that ID again?” And it wasn’t my name on the ID, anyway. They were like, “This obviously isn’t you.” And I was like, “You got me!” It’s not like it even matters. C’mon, the drinking age, of all things? I’m not stressed about that.

How would you describe your personal style?
Ross: As far as fashion?
Mhm.
Ross: Mine’s pretty interesting. It was either free or it’s been in my closet for a long time and I need to figure out how to make it look cool. That’s been my story. We spend so much time on music and work that I don’t have time to go shopping.
Rocky: I mean, I don’t spend too much time on style. If we’re doing a shoot, obviously it’s styled. But, I’ve been into the whole 90s kind of grunge look.
Ross: I think the whole reason we’re in this industry is because we like to observe beauty and fashion is part of it. Whether that’s in music videos or album covers or what we wear – anything. We like to appreciate beauty.

You’re both from a big family with five siblings. What was the most annoying part about growing up?
Ross: When you were being bad. So like, mom would treat all the other kids and you got the short end of the stick because you were being bad. That was probably the most annoying. Like, “Damn it, I don’t get Skittles?!”
Rocky: I was always the kid, where like, if I was doing some sort of chore and no one else was, I was like this is bullshit [laughs]. Like, what the hell? Tell someone else to come in here and do this. But, I think because I was that way and would argue about it growing up, my mom purposefully was like, “Cool, I’m going to keep doing this to you to get you out of that mindset.”
Ross: My mom was really smart about how she went about raising us.
Moms are the shit.
Ross: Yeah, our mom is the shit. We love moms.
Rocky: Yo! [points at Ross]
Ross: Yo, I gotta write something down really quick.
Ross pulls out his phone and starts typing inherently fast on what looks like a long notes page of randomly scribed thoughts and ideas that the brothers want to come to fruition. I am watching the both of them understand each other by exchanging a quick look and a “yo,” and Ross’ mind is pretty much reeling over the idea of an idea.
Rocky: We’re on this wavelength. He’ll be like, “I gotta write something down,” and we both knew what it was.

What was the best part about growing up in a big family?
Rocky: Honestly, when we first moved to LA, we moved into a two-bedroom apartment. All of the brothers shared one room with four air beds.
Ross: We got bunk beds eventually.
Rocky: Yeah, but still. We shared one room between four brothers for a good couple of years. It was really hectic at times, but it was also kind of awesome. There was never a dull moment.
Ross: Looking back at that time, I will always have some really happy memories. Like playing Line Rider. You remember that game?
Rocky: Yeah! Or just playing Xbox, or maybe just talking about, y’know, maybe someone had their first kiss. Just little, y’know, stuff you did when you were ten.
Ross: Yeah, the innocent things. And it was cool, too, because we didn’t have TV. We always read and we were always hanging out and just talking. We didn’t have phones. You know what I mean? The iPhone wasn’t around and there was no social media. We were living in motels. It was so much fun.
Rocky: Ok, but I had a Chocolate. A green Chocolate.
Woah, throwback. Remember sidekicks?
Ross: I always wanted a sidekick and I never got one. Why was the sidekick such a thing?! [laughs]

All of your siblings seem to be creatives of some sort, some of you in multiple ways. What’s it like working together and do you guys just spit ideas at each other at Thanksgiving dinner?
Ross: Mhm. Yeah, somewhat.
Rocky: Yeah, basically. Everyone’s kind of always attempting to create something. When it comes to music, I would say Ross and I are a little more creative musically. But our sister is into fashion and she’s a YouTuber. Our brother is starting his own show, as well.
Ross: What’s interesting is that yeah, we kind of do bounce ideas off of each other like you said. I feel like the ideas we all come up with in a group are oftentimes better than the ideas we get from outside people. I don’t know if I’m biased to their opinions and views, but there’s just a lot of creativity involved in the way we were brought up, I guess.
But yeah, like Rocky said, we kind of head the music side right now. We’re in the studio almost every day. Not while I’m in Vancouver because it’s kind of hard. But, like yesterday – I flew in, we did interviews all day, and then we went to the studio. That’s just what we do.
Rocky: We were trying to film a little Instagram story with the new beat, but the beat sucked [laughs].
Ross: Dude, I thought the beat was good. I’ll be completely honest with you, it was dope.
Rocky: Actually, yeah. We listened to some of it this morning on the way here while we were driving and I was like, “Oh, that’s kinda dope.”
Ross: The listening on fresh ears, you can present it to yourself in a new way.
Your parents named all five of you with names beginning with R. Is there a story behind that?
Ross: Yeah, they didn’t actually mean to do that. It kind of happened coincidentally with the first three. The first two were R names, and then my older brother wanted to name Rocky after the Colorado Rockies, so then they had three R’s. So I think they were like, might as well do it for the rest of them.
Yeah, might as well not make the others feel left out.
Rocky: [laughs] That would suck if you’re like –
Ross: – John. I’d be like, “What the fuck, mom?!”

You guys have started a new music duo, called The Driver Era. What made you two decide to specifically work together?
Ross: It’s just because that’s what we do. We’re so similar in the way that we work. Even outside of music. We like the same routine, we have the same thought process, we like the same music, we work really well together, and now we live together. It just makes sense. We share opinion in a really cool way.
I was actually reading this book recently called, “Think and Grow Rich,” and it’s like this classic book that most successful people will be like, “You should read this book.” But in the book, it talks about how two people can form a third consciousness because your brains are just on the same level, and I think we have that.
Rocky: Sup.

What does The Driver Era want to accomplish sound-wise in the music world?
Ross: It’s always a goal to push the envelope in some sort of way.
Rocky: I’d like to be a multi-format band where we find success in every single genre. So far, our single, “Preacher Man,” definitely has that. We want to have a broad spectrum of music and a broad audience, and that’s the ultimate goal.
Ross: To reach the masses, but not in a masses “way.”
Rocky: We don’t want to be like here’s a generic –
Ross: – here’s some generic art –
Rocky: – like here’s a pop song, y’know?
What inspired The Driver Era’s new song, “Preacher Man?”
Ross: The song is inspired by all sorts of stuff, but primarily it’s, as I like to call it, our existential crisis song. It’s not religious, even though the lyrics are, “Hey, Mr. preacher man,” it’s not like, “Hey, we’re Catholic.” [both laugh]
It’s more like we’re just reaching out for something in hopes of finding a meaning.
Rocky: I had a great moment where I kind of had a late night in Hollywood. It was a Saturday, and I was leaving Hollywood at like, 5am.
Ross: [laughs] What a great way to start a story!
Rocky: I was in the Uber and it’s literally 5am and I haven’t slept yet. I was trying to get up to Sherman Oaks where we live. We were going up the hill and the main street was closed. So the Uber tried to keep turning off, but all of those streets were closed, too. On the same street, there were these people biking. I thought, y’know, I don’t really know if these bikers are insane for being up this early or if I’m insane for being up this late!
Anyway, “Preacher Man,” kind of reminds me of that. Everyone has questions about themselves and sometimes you’ll have a strange thought of, “Why is that?” The song reminds me of that, like, damn, maybe I need to get my shit together.
Ross: [laughs] Coming through the door at 6am like, “What am I doing?!”

What can we expect from The Driver Era next?
Ross: There are a lot of songs we have coming that I’m really fond of. That’s really the strategy right now. I’m going to be in Vancouver filming for Sabrina, but we’re going to still be collaborating wirelessly. But yeah, the idea is to collect a whole bunch of these songs that we already have and finalize them. We’re going to release a bunch of singles and then eventually an album. We’ll be playing festivals, too.
Are you guys going to Coachella?
Rocky: Yeah we are. I’m trying to ride one of those helicopters there. Called The Blade or something like that.
Ross: That’d be the sickest way to show up to Coachella [laughs].
Rocky: That’s what I’m saying!
What do you guys do for fun?
Rocky: We play hockey a lot.
Ross: Yeah, hockey. We like to go out and we like to dance. Y’know, gotta take advantage of the LA lifestyle. But yeah, a lot of hockey and a lot of sports.
Rocky: A little softball on the weekends is always nice. Just kind of like getting out in the sun.

Biggest turn ons?
Ross: Ok [sighs].
Rocky: Intellegence.
Ross: Yeahhhhhhhh [sighs]. Man. Y’know. Well, it’s just like – ugh. Like, come on!
Rocky: Ok, if we’re talking like turn-ons where you’re looking for something more than just like a sexual interaction, then yeah, intelligence. I want something that isn’t just your typical Hollywood girl. That is not that attractive to me. If you don’t live in California, that’s a little bit of a turn on as well [laughs].
Ross: To get out of the more psychological aspect of this, I like a good walk.
Rocky: Mmmm.
Ross: But like a natural walk, not a forced walk. It just says so much about how someone views themselves. If you respect yourself, I find that really attractive.
Rocky: I also think honesty is very attractive.
Ross: Totally. I mean, we could go on and on about this subject [laughs], because we have opinions!
Rocky: Y’know, obviously a good set of eyes.
Ross: Good sex! Y’know? [laughs] But honestly, that’s essential to a relationship. If you are not having good sex, you should just call it quits. Because there’s someone that you will have good sex with, you just gotta find that right person.
Rocky: I want to meet someone that I learn a lot from. I think that’d be really cool. Maybe she’s older, like, who cares? I got no problem with age.
Ross: Yeah, age isn’t really a thing for me.
Rocky: I want to have a conversation with you and be like, “Wow, the things you’re saying to me are very intelligent.”
Ross: I prefer older girls, actually.

FMK – Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Margot Robbie.
Rocky: Oh, shit! You can’t hit us with that!
I just did.
Rocky: Ok, kill Kim.
Ross: Yeah, sorry Kim.
Rocky: I would bang Rihanna, and marry Margot.
Ross: I might marry Riri, bro.
Rocky: Really?
Ross: Yeah, she’s just bad.
Rocky: Yeah, then we’re different, too.
Ross: Yeah, I’m saying let’s have different answers. But who wouldn’t marry Margot Robbie? And who wouldn’t marry Rihanna?
Rocky: And I do like Kim, because she works. Nothing against Kim, I think they’re all great.
Ross: Kim is where she is for a reason!
Rocky: Also, don’t want to get on Kanye’s nerves, y’know what I’m saying? I’m a Kanye fan.
Ross: Big Kanye fans.
Describe the best date you’ve ever had?
Both think for a while.
Rocky: I mean, this is so cliché, but the times where you’re –
Ross: Mhm. I already know what you’re gunna say.
Rocky: – where you just end up on the beach and it’s 2am, and that’s it. It’s the most cliché thing, but it’s great.
Ross: Usually it’s a newer relationship, too, so you have these like butterflies.
Rocky: Everything’s new.
Ross: Sometimes you’ll just share a bottle of wine in a hotel room. We’ve had a few nights like that.
You don’t even realize the time.
Ross: Yeah, and then the sun starts rising.
Rocky: You’re sharing music on a Bluetooth speaker. The room next to you is probably pissed off.
Ross: But you couldn’t care less. Little bit intoxicated, just a tiny bit.

Describe the best boys night out?
Rocky: Ooh. King’s game.
Ross: King’s gameeeeeee. But then, after the King’s game, though, it’s like ok cool, we’re going out to the club! We’re gunna see some of our homies! We have a few friends that work at some places and they’ll be like, “Yeah, come through, we’ve got a spot for you!” I like going to spots where you feel comfortable and welcome, and you feel like you have a stake in the place. You want to have a good time because you feel like you belong there.
Rocky: That’s the worst part about some super douchey clubs here.
Ross: Fuuuuck that.
Rocky: Why would you want people to feel unwanted?
Ross: There was once a time before the velvet rope. So, check this out! No bottle service. It’s just a bar, and everyone goes in and has a good time and there’s no sort of hierarchy. That would be so much more fun.
Rocky: Let’s do it.
Ross: I’m down.
What’s your coffee order?
Ross: Usually just black coffee.
Rocky: We do that thing in the morning where you put the butter and coconut oil in it.
Ross: It’s called bulletproof coffee.
Butter in your damn coffee.
Rocky: It’s like, healthy fats for your brain.
Ross: Yeah, we don’t do it to be thinner [laughs]. We’re pretty lean as it is.
Rocky: It’s a good way to start the morning.
Ross: The idea is to supply your brain with just super healthy, saturated fats.
