Michael Rainey Jr. Talks OITNB, Southern Girls, and Teen Dating

Unlike most of us, whose biggest problem as a teen was finding lipgloss to match with our braces or finding a way to sneak out of our parents’ house, Michael Rainey Jr. has an acting career on top of the typical teen struggles.

At age 15, Michael has already had the experience of acting in the Barbershop series, the Starz series Power, and many other shows that you’ve probably watched, including Orange Is The New Black and The Butler. We asked Michael about dating in high school, dank memes, and being a child actor.

What was the most fun part of acting on Orange Is The New Black

The most fun part was working with Benny [who plays Benito Mendoza, Gloria’s son], because we got to curse without getting in trouble.

You’re appearing in the latest Barbershop movie, what’s your favorite barbershop meme?

There was one on Instagram with a picture of me with and without dreads & it read “when she says she only dates West Indian men.”

You’re originally from Kentucky, what’s the best thing about southern girls?

I was born in Kentucky but I’ve never lived there, but I’ve been down south a few times. I love the girls down there, that southern hospitality…they are so sweet.

Who’s your celebrity crush?

Hmm… that took some thought, but I would have to say Zendaya.

Who’s your favorite Kardashian, why?

Believe it or not, I don’t have one, no favorite Kardashian… surprise!

What’s the worst thing about being a teenager? The best?

Hmm… There’s nothing really bad about being a teenager except sometimes you feel like you’re old enough to do things and your mother reminds that you’re still a teen. The best? Going to parties, hanging out with friends, playing video games and being a “big kid.”

How has being a child actor affected your dating life?

Sometimes I’m busy, but sometimes I don’t know if [people] like me because I’m an actor, or if they like me because I’m Michael.

How do you let a girl know that you’re into her?

I guess just the way I talk to her, and I am a little more shy with her than if she was just a girl that was my friend. For me it’s easier if she kinda is into me first, then it makes my job easier.

What’s your dating deal breaker?

A deal breaker for me is too much makeup all the time. That’s a no-no. I could understand if it was for an event or something, but too much all the time is definitely a no-no for me.

What’s the most embarrassing moment you’ve ever had with a girl?

I’ve never really had one… well, not that I remember. I hope not to have one, I gotta try to be cool in front of the ladies.
