Chelley just made a reggae-pop song for girls who’ve had their hearts played with

Chelley is an up-and-coming Brooklyn singer whose single “Took The Night” represents a confident, DGAF attitude that is here to stay. It’s featured in many vogue choreography videos across YouTube and has reached over 1 million streams on Spotify.

And in her next tune, she’s showing us badasses have a heart and need love too, believe it or not. Her new single “Love Sick” is a reggae-island pop fusion song where her silky vocals express her yearning for love. It’s the first single off her forthcoming EP and shows how versatile her style really is.

Check out our interview with Chelley below and stream her new single here.

In one sentence, who is Chelley?

There’s a lot of layers and aspects to my life, so Chelley is a dope person.

How did you get your start in music?

I always been interested in all types of music. I met up with Ricky Blaze, the producer. He was so interested in putting me in the studio to develop my vocals and artistry.

Who were some of your music inspirations growing up and now?

Well then and now, I’ve always been into Beyonce. I like her drive and how she just loves her craft. Also, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion.

What do you hope to accomplish with your music? Who do you want to inspire?

I want to get my style and message across. I hope my message translates in the right way to the people who wants to hear it.

So your popular song “Took The Night” reached 1 MILLION streams on spotify! How did you react?

I’m still reacting to it haha. Like “OH MY GOSH.” It just made me feel like I was taking a step in the right path and it makes me excited to get more out there. It’s such a big thing, I don’t think I’ll ever come down from that.

“Took The Night” was definitely a confident anthem, so how do you maintain your badass confidence?

Well when you depend on people, you kind of are left with this base for disappointment. I had to learn to big up myself. You gotta have your own party for yourself like all the time. So my confidence came from just loving myself.

What inspired your new single “Love Sick” and what was the message behind it?

That’s another production by my executive producer, Ricky Blaze. The beat was real mellow and cool but had an distinctive reggae vibe so we wanted to match that with something killer. The message behind “Love Sick” has to do with someone you like or in love with sending you miss signals.

What should we expect off your forthcoming EP? Can you drop the title?

I’m always changing ideas so I can’t really drop the title. We don’t know, but we know it’s going to be different. I like to try all types of things but girl power of course! I’m going to open up the doors and you’re going to get to see Chelley. Lots of fusions, very diverse.

What advice would you give to women trying to make it n a male dominated industry?

When it comes to a male dominated industry we have to be confident in ourselves. There’s always gonna be someone telling you that something isn’t for you. I found that having my own type of confidence and having an I don’t care attitude will take you far. I can do anything you can do and no one can tell me anything, period.

Do you ever get any musical comparisons? If so, who and what was the most random?

I haven’t been compared to anyone YET, but that always comes. That’s a cool thing though, it gives me a sense of individuality.

If you could bring back one item that went out of style, what would it be?

CD players! I miss those, you could make your own mixes and stuff. There is some food I wish would come back, but that’s a different story because i’m a foodie. Let me just say I miss  Dunkaroo’s would come back and Remix Sprite. Those were the besttt!

What products can you not leave the house without?

Lip gloss and i’m a big perfume girl. Like they’re everywhere. In my house, my car, my pocketbook. I’m really in love with this new Alexander McQueen and Chanel will always be a favorite!

Favorite 90’s television show?

All That, Mad TV, and Apollo.

What’s a weird talent or habit of yours?

I don’t know if it’s weird, but my favorite snack of all time is a PB&J sandwich. But, I don’t trust anyone to make it for me because there’s a certain way I have to spread it. Like if you do, i’ll open it up and rearrange the spreading of it.

If you had to choose 3 women to be apart of your Girl Cult, who would they be and why?

Well anything I do i’m definitely bring Beyonce on, she’s just so smart and talented. I would bring RuPaul into my cult. I love him, he’s just everything! Taraji (P. Henson) too. She’s like my self, Bad ass and very versatile.

What should we expect from Chelley for the rest of 2017?

Expect Chelley. There’s so many dope layers and we’re about to be peeling all of those back! So expect me!
