For a change Victoria’s Secret isn’t making their models all wear matching glossy hair extensions and wigs so they look like beautiful Barbie dolls this year!
Instead, they’re letting all their models rock down the runway with their natural hairstyles — or at least the best possible version of their natural hairstyles.
Talking to Refinery29, Victoria’s Secret hairstylist Sarah Potempa said:
“We want to embrace everyone’s natural beauty. We’re giving a carefree approach to the length and type of curl. Some women with shorter hair, maybe a lob, will walk with that hair. We’re not gonna add extensions to make it super long. And if someone has short hair on the side or a tight haircut, we’re not gonna put a wig on or put extensions on their head. We’re gonna embrace it. There are 51 women, and we’re gonna make them feel their most beautiful.”
The decision also probably had something to do with all the good press VS got last year after Maria Borges made history for being the first model to walk the runway with her natural hair.
Not that we’re mad about it. It was a smart move on Victoria’s Secret’s part!
Even though it’s still a far cry from embracing a body positive standard of beauty that’s not all about textbook gorgeous models with string bean figures, it’s a start.
