FEATURE INTERVIEW:
Can you tell us about the moment you knew you wanted to pursue music professionally?
It wasn’t so much one moment but more like a build up. I have music in my blood. on my Cuban side, my family can all sing, dance and play instruments. However, on my mom’s side, my mom was the one with the brilliant taste in music and helped me grow my foundation as an artist. Expressing myself through music feels like the most natural way to express myself and performing original tracks takes that to the next level. When I knew this was something I wanted to do, I put everything into it, I even went to performing arts school.
Are there any particular music genres that you find most challenging or rewarding to explore?
I love exploring music that pushes my creativity, in my unreleased music, I blend shoegazey Indie Rock with R & B and soulful vocals a lot. It feels challenging yet rewarding, and it’s where I am, who I am right now. I still have respect for all other genres though.
What inspires your songwriting, and do you draw from personal experiences in your music?
Absolutely. Most of my songs contain lyrics taken out of my journal entries. I’m all about expressing love, frustrations, and navigating life. It’s my way of dealing with my emotions and hopefully it’s something someone else can also connect with.
Can you share a memorable experience from your time on set or during a live performance?
When I dj’ed at Egg earlier this year, the crowd was like no other. The whole thing felt electric. I don’t know if it was because I was the only girl on the lineup or because they liked the stuff I was playing but everyone from each floor had come to see me play and hyped me up throughout. It felt like we were all having a shared, unspoken experience.
How do you prepare for a music performance?
For a music performance, I try to connect with my inner self – and honestly, the best way to connect to her is I usually have a drink right before stage to ease the nerves, haha.
Who are some of your biggest influences in music, and how have they shaped your career?
Artists like Cocteau Twins, Nirvana and Joss Stone probably. They all have boundary-pushing qualities that I really like about them. Listening to each one of them reminds me to stay true to myself. they’ve shaped how I approach my work.
What projects are you currently working on, and what can your fans look forward to in the near future?
I’m working on some new grungy R & B sounding stuff. There’s also some interesting visual concepts in the work which are always very fun!
How do you handle the pressure and expectations that come with being in the public eye in a demanding industry?
I’m a Capricorn, so I’m naturally pretty grounded. I don’t let things get to my head that easily. I stay focused on my art, on how Alysha feels and the message. surrounding myself with people I trust and know very well helps me stay authentic no matter what I may be dealing with. Gotta protect your peace.
What advice would you give to aspiring artists who want to pursue multiple creative paths like you have?
Don’t box yourself in. Also remember career paths can link, it’s not just about singing or dj’ing or modelling. Many great artists do more than one thing. Plus if your plan a doesn’t work, at least you have a back up. Stay open.
