A study done by researchers at Northwestern University found that moments of conception cause the fireworks — it’s something that had been previously known to take place in animals, but never considered for human babies. The flash happens when sperm enters the egg, triggering a calcium increase, and a subsequent release of zinc (ew). When zinc is released, the chemical binds to small molecules that can be seen on a normal camera microscope.
The photos of the flash will help scientists to identify the quality of the egg’s fertility and even the health of the future embryo, according to The Telegraph.
“This means if you can look at the zinc spark at the time of fertilization, you will know immediately which eggs are the good ones to transfer in in vitro fertilization,” Professor Terese Woodrige told the Telegraph. “It’s a way of sorting egg quality in a way we’ve never been able to assess before. “
