Xena Is Coming Back To TV Because She’s Allowed To Be A Lesbian Now
A lot has happened in the 15 years since television series “Xena: Warrior Princess” went off air, and now the world is finally ready for Xena and her partner-in-crime, Gabrielle, to return to the small screen.
And by partner-in-crime, we mean lesbian lover. We all knew Gabrielle and Xena had some shit going down, but the relationship’s been confirmed, and identified as a keystone theme of the reboot.
In a Tumblr Q&A, Xena’s writer and executive producer spoke about the upcoming differences in the show, saying:
“‘Xena’ will be a very different show made for very different reasons. There is no reason to bring back ‘Xena’ if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication in the 1990s. It will also express my view of the world — which is only further informed by what is happening right now — and is not too difficult to know what that is if you do some digging.”
Unfortunately, however, original cast member Lucy Lawless won’t be around to experience the new world order.
“I’m probably not up for that gig,” she said in an interview at Comicon. “I can’t imagine how you could tell the story with me at 47-years-old and make it work…I really do want Xena and Gabrielle to live again one way or another. I’d love to be part of that, but even if I’m not, I wish them well.”
C’mon, Xena! Just because you’re freely allowed to be with Gabrielle doesn’t mean you have to break our hearts now!
