Wind up to these 9 throwback dancehall jams
Are you ready to “wind up” this summer ladies?? And when I say “wind” I mean as in dutty wind! Artists are currently making so many hits that are giving us those 2000s dancehall vibes, and we’re so here for it! French Montana’s “Unforgettable” and Drake’s “Blem” are just a few songs that’s making us wanna bring out the sun visors and matching jogging/terry cloth short sets!
Remember how popular the dancehall movement was in the 2000s? You couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing a song with some type of dancehall beat. Sean Paul had everyone craving a lit basement party with all reggae aesthetics. Once we heard that beat drop to “Get Busy” we knew it was time to get on the dance floor.
With it being summer time, I think this is the perfect time for artists to be giving us these hot, Jamaican-me-happy vibes. I mean, who doesn’t wanna be on an island sipping piña coladas and hip-rolling the night away? Well, since some of us can’t really be on an island all day because, life, or if you really just wanna bring that dancehall vibe all the way back, here’s a couple of songs from the 2000s that’ll def put you in that reggae mood and help you bring out your inner Queen of the Dancehall this summer.
1. “Get Busy” by Sean Paul
Doesn’t this video just give you life? It’ll def make you want to throw a reggae party or go to a reggae club!
2. “Pon de Replay” by Rihanna
Before she was BadGalRiRi she was making that music of the sun. This song will make you feel young and playful, and we just love when RiRi shows her island side. #BarbadosBaby
3. “Baby Boy” by Beyoncé feat. Sean Paul
No one expected a reggae hit from Bey, which is what made it such a bop! Her voice sounds all heated & sultry over the beat, perfect to match this summer heat. What genre can’t the Queen conquer?
4. “Turn Me On” by Kevin Lyttle
Ever heard of the Carnival parades?? If not, Google it, because I think this song will make you feel like you’re at one!

5. “King of the Dancehall” by Beenie Man
The title speaks for itself. This is the song that’ll make you feel like you’re Queen of the Dancehall! You got #Royalty
6. “No Letting Go” by Wayne Wonder
Play this when you’re winding down a little, or when you wanna throw in a slow one. It’s a little more sensual, but you need a wind down in the mix from all of that winding up right?
7. “Gimme the Light” by Sean Paul
Honestly, any time you heard Sean Paul’s name on a track you knew it was gonna be lit. One of his first hits and one of my faves, you have to have this on your playlist.
8. “Jook Gal” by Elephant Man
Because when a song comes on and it says “shake that booty, turn it around” you have to do it. Everyone knows that.
9. “Beautiful Girls” by Sean Kingston
The lyrics are kind of messed up, but doesn’t it gas you up a little? Either way, it’s a bop!
Well there you have it chicas. This playlist is perfect for when you’re getting ready for a trip to the islands, or maybe just have a few long islands. Just add these 2000s hits along with the current ones to your rastafari playlist and you’ll be feeling like you’re in someone’s reggae basement party.
