You Can Now Buy a Healthy Seaweed That Tastes Like Bacon
There are lots of reasons to go vegetarian or vegan, but there are also tons of reasons why it’s easier said than done. One reason in particular is bacon.
I mean, bacon is delicious. And what are you supposed to eat for breakfast if you can’t have your morning meat? Sure, bacon is probs horrible for you, but who can say no to that sweet and smoky flavor?
Well, now you don’t have to – maybe, because researchers at Oregon State discovered that a certain strain of seaweed tastes exactly like bacon when it’s fried up, according to them.
The seaweed is a form of red marine algae that has twice the nutritional value of kale, according to Business Insider.
The researcher at Oregon State, Chris Langdon, accidentally stumbled upon this miracle bacon-substitute, which is already consumed by many people in Northern Europe, when he was searching for a food source for snails.
“This stuff is pretty amazing,” Langdon told OSU. “When you fry it, which I have done, it tastes like bacon, not seaweed. And it’s a pretty strong bacon flavor.”
So why does a random strain of red algae taste like cured pork? The researchers aren’t sure, but they immediately seized the opportunity to grow more of it and sell it to vegetarians, vegans, or anyone who wants a healthier version of their fave fried meat.
You can purchase the seaweed, which is marketed as “dulse,” at Whole Foods, or on Amazon, where many reviewers say that they use the flakes as a low-sodium seasoning option.
I’ll definitely be trying out this dulse myself to see how much it actually tastes like bacon, but until then, you should consider trying it too. After all, it can’t be that much different than turkey bacon, right?
