FEATURE INTERVIEW

For those of us that dont know you, can you tell us a little bit about yourself? How does your cultural background influence your sound?

I AM ARGENTINA BORN IN BUENOS AIRES, I AM THE YOUNGER OF 3 FEMALE SISTERS. I SING SINCE I STARTED TALKING. AT 13 YEARS OLD I STARTED PLAYING THE GUITAR AND COMPOSED MY FIRST SONGS.

HIPHOP CAME INTO MY LIFE THROUGH SOME CDS A SPANISH RAP FRIEND GAVE ME. THEN I MET A GROUP OF PERUVIAN RAPPERS WITH WHOM I DID FREE STYLE, AND FROM THERE I NEVER STOP RAPING AGAIN. IN ADDITION TO MUSIC, ONE OF MY PASSIONS IS CLOTHING AND FASHION I LIKE TO DRESS VERY MUCH, I ENJOY IT TOO MUCH.

I AM A FAN OF BUYING ACCESSORIES AND CLOTHING FROM NATIONAL INDEPENDENT BRANDS. THERE IS SOMETHING THAT ATTRACTS ME TO BEING ABLE TO SUPPORT THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY, I FEEL A PART OF IT. I VERY LIKE TO MIX THE SPORTS STYLE WITH SOMETHING EXTREMELY ELEGANT, I LOVE THOSE CONTRASTS, ALSO REPRESENT MY WAY OF THINKING AND BEING. I LOVE COLLECTING CERTAIN CLOTHES AND I HAVE WORKED IN STORES AND DOING STYLING FOR FILM SERIES AND ADVERTISING.

You are a singer, composer and rapper. Apart from synthesizing different genres, how do you feel you set yourself apart from other artists?

I HAVE LEBANESE BLOOD ON MY FATHER’S SIDE AND ITALIAN AND SPANISH ON MY MOTHER’S PART. MY ROOT IS SOMETHING THAT I ALWAYS HAVE IN MIND WHEN I CREATE AND GET INSPIRED.
I LIKE TO MIX DIFFERENT GENRES AND ABOVE ALL EXPERIMENT A LOT, I LOVE TO PLAY WITH MY VOICE AND TAKE IT TO DIFFERENT PLACES. I ENJOY SINGING AND RAPING VERY MUCH, BOTH MAKE ME ABLE TO CREATE MY OWN STYLE WHEN I EXPRESS MYSELF THROUGH MY VOICE.

I BELIEVE THAT ALL ARTISTS HAVE AN ESSENCE OF THEIR OWN, WE COME WITH A DIFFERENT MISSION AND A SPECIFIC GIFT. MY MUSIC TALKS ABOUT BEING ALIVE, IT TALKS ABOUT DEATH, LOVE AND HEARTBREAK, ABOUT FEELING THAT SOMETIMES WE ARE GOING TO BREAK UP BUT SOMETHING BIGGER SUPPORTS US AND MAKES US EVOLVE AND CLOSE US TO OUR BEST VERSION. BEING ABLE TO TRANSFORM PAIN INTO MUSIC IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY I DO WHAT I DO. IF I HEAL, THOSE WHO HEAR MY MUSIC WILL ALSO DO IT.

What is your song writing process?

MY COMPOSITION PROCESS IS BASED ON IMPROVISATION, GENERALLY I PLAY ON A BEAT OR ON A HARMONY EVEN MANY TIMES I START FROM A MELODY MADE WITH THE VOICE THAT I RECORDED IN MY IPHONE NOTES SO I DON’T FORGET IT. THE TELEPHONE TODAY IS A KEY TOOL, IN THE STUDIO I WRITE EVERYTHING IN THE NOTES, BEFORE I DID IT ON MY MACBOOK BUT FOR EXAMPLE I WROTE EVERYTHING FOR MY NEXT RECORD ON MY CELL PHONE.

What are some of your favorite effects to add to your voice (i.e. reverb, distortion, delay)?

TO PROCESS MY VOICE I ALWAYS USE REVERB DELAYS AND DIFFERENT PLUGINS, SUCH AS VHAHALA OR AUTOTUNE. I DO THE USE OF EFFECTS AS A 100% AESTHETIC CHOICE. IN MY ALBUM I ACHIEVED TO EXPERIMENT A LOT WITH DIFFERENT VOICES IN MATTRESSES, TEXTURES, AMOSPHERES AND VOCAL ARRANGEMENTS.

You are from Argentina. In your song “Mirarte” why did you choose to say “Yo tengo el tumbao’ que vuelve loco a los niggas”? Why use the word “niggas” when there are other words you could have used?

MY SONG LOOK AT YOU IS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR AND ONE OF THE FAVORITE OF MY PUBLIC. WHEN I WROTE IT I DID IT ON ANOTHER BEAT AND THEN 4 AM AFTER GIVING A LOT OF ROUNDS WITH THE ENGINEER WE DECIDED TO GO TO THE PRODUCER’S BEATS FOLDER (VENOM) WE TESTED THE LYRICS ON THE BEAT WHICH FINALLY WAS THE DEFINITIVE ONE AND WE LOVED IT! THE USE OF THE WORD NIGGA WAS REALLY USED IN AN INNOCENT WAY EVEN IGNORANT ON MY PART. I DO NOT CONSIDER MYSELF A RACIST PERSON OF ECHO I FIGHT FOR THE RIGHTS OF PEOPLE, WOMEN AND CHILDREN OF THE WORLD. I BELIEVE IN ALL STRUGGLES AND I RESPECT EACH ONE OF THEM. I ALWAYS LISTENED TO RAP BUT I DON’T SPEAK ENGLISH PERFECTLY. I DID NOT REALLY KNOW THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE USE OF THIS WORD. ON YOUTUBE WHEN YOU READ THE LYRICS, I REMOVED THAT PART AND PUBLICLY APOLOGIZED TO ANYONE I COULD OFFEND. WHAT I LEAST WANT WITH MY MUSIC IS TO OFFEND PEOPLE, THAT IS NOT MY GAME….

What are three songs or projects you’re currently listening to that you can’t stop playing?

CURRENTLY I HAVE BEEN LISTENING A LOT TO SOLANGE, SOFIANE PAMART AND A LOT OF OLD JAZZ BY WOMEN PERFORMERS ABOVE ALL. I LISTEN TO MUSIC ALL DAY . I LOVED THE MUSIC FROM THE FILM ”ENTERGALACTIC” BY KID KUDI, I THINK IT WAS EXCELLENT. I HAVE A PLAYLIST OF ALL GENRES. I CONSIDER THAT MAKING A PLAYLIST FOR SOMEONE IS A GREAT ACT OF LOVE. I LOVE REGGAETTON, I LIVE IN COLOMBIA BOGOTA FOR 9 YEARS SO I AM VERY INFLUENCED BY COLOMBIAN MUSIC. USUALLY AT PARTIES WITH MY FRIENDS WE HEAR SALSA AND PERREO AS WE CALL THEM THERE.

If you could collaborate on a track with one of your favorite artists, who would it be?

I WOULD LOVE TO MAKE MUSIC WITH ROSALIA, SHARE A CAMP, THAT PRODUCES ME A SONG, WHATEVER… I ADMIRE HER AND HER WORK AS A PRODUCER SEEMS IMPECCABLE.

What’s one city you haven’t performed in that you look forward to performing at in the future?

I NEVER SANG IN THE US AND I WOULD LOVE IT; NEW YORK, MIAMI OR LOS ANGELES WOULD BE INCREDIBLE!

What do you have in store for 2023, any new music we can expect to listen to?

NOTHING MORE AND NOTHING LESS IS COMING FOR 2023 THAN MY DISC ” DIRECTO AL CORA ” SO I CAN’T ASK FOR MORE! THIS WORK IS A VERY PERSONAL JOURNEY, IT IS REALLY AN OPEN DIARY WHERE I EXPRESS MYSELF WITH COMPLETE SINCERITY ABOUT THE MOMENT I HAD TO GO THROUGH AFTER A BREAKUP AND THE END OF A LOVING RELATIONSHIP. WE ALL CARRY WOUNDS THAT NEED TO FINISH HEALING, BUT DIRECTLY TO THE HEART IT SAVED MY LIFE DOING IT WAS A TOOL OF TRANSFORMATION AND HEALING. JULIAN BERNAL COLOMBIAN PRODUCER LIVING IN MEXICO WAS IN CHARGE OF CREATING 8 OF THE 10 TRACKS THAT MAKE UP THE ALBUM. I ALSO HAD THE PARTICIPATION OF THE PRODUCERS HIKYMON (COLOMBIA) AND P.JAGUAR (BARCELONA).
