Sorry But Spot Treatments Actually Make Your Pimples Stick Around Longer
Speaking as somebody who gets pimples a lot, I’ve tried just about everything to get them to run away screaming from my face and never return.
And as much as I like to pretend that whichever spot treatment I bought from Walgreens that month actually made my face look better overnight, if I’m being honest, they never really worked.
Turns out, it wasn’t just because I was buying the wrong products, it’s because the only thing spot treatments do is make your pimples stick around longer.

In an interview with Into the Gloss, esthetician Renée Rouleau points out that our obsession with making our pimples go away overnight could actually be making our skin stay pocked for longer.
“Whenever a blemish appears, the goal is to get it to heal quickly,” Renée says. “Most people have a myriad of zit-zapping spot treatments in their bathroom and will apply these generously the moment a blemish pops up in hopes of drying it out to get it to go away more rapidly. But most spot treatments actually make the blemish stick around longer when used in this way. It will also lead to a prolonged recovery time with scarring.”
And as much as I don’t want to believe my spot treatments could ever hurt me, I think Renée probably has a point here.
Because I’ve used a lot of spot treatments and it takes FOREVER for the pimple to completely go away.
So instead of putting a whole bunch of product on our pimples, Renée says “the best solution is to leave it alone to get rid of it faster.”
Or pop it, if your pimple’s a freshly sprouted white head.
She says that “you can gently squeeze it as long as it comes out in one or two tries.”
So there you have it.
Take this advice with a grain of salt if you must, but maybe for your skin’s sake you should give it a try.
