First of all, we need your story! Where did you come from? How did you realize you could make music?
It all started when I was 6 years old. My grandfather had passed, and I was heartbroken. You’re not supposed to lose your best friend at that age. I had gone through some of his things and found old tapes of him singing in a Doo Wop group. Since then, I made a promise to myself to dedicate my life to music because it was the only way I could feel close to my grandfather.
Did you take music lessons?
Living in an apartment in Queens doesn’t make pursuing music easy. No neighbor likes constant loud music! So I started taking music lessons in the back of a barber shop with a local musician from the neighborhood named Foncho Castellar. Soon, he had both my brother and I join a Colombian Folk Music group which was pretty interesting for an Italian/Irish kid to be singing in Spanish. Nonetheless, it was a great experience for me and really started my journey as a performer. Later on I went onto musical theater, and to sing in a ton of local cover bands. It’s been a lifetime of hard work and doing it all grassroots, but I’m proud of where that’s all taken me.
What are you most excited about when people hear “Boo Hoo?” Do you think they will be surprised by the lyrics?
“Boo Hoo” tells the story of being in a very one-sided relationship with someone who’s messing around with others and in the midst of it all… breaking your heart. We’ve all been in situations where we’ve felt slighted and really been tested. I love getting messages from fans saying this song really meant a lot to them. I feel like nowadays everyone writes about love and happiness, so it was about time someone kept it real.
If “Boo Hoo” were on a movie soundtrack, set to a specific scene maybe, what would it be and why? Is it an anthem or a party song?
“Boo Hoo” is definitely an anti-love anthem! I would imagine it would perfectly fit in a scene where a cheater gets exposed and then the cheat-ee (if that’s a word) throws a massive house party. I think I’m gonna write a movie now [laughing].
Do you think it’s easier to be an artist in the day and age of digital music and Spotify? Do you think it’s harder to connect with people in terms of getting the music out there?
I wouldn’t particularly say it’s easier to be an artist because that’s just something you either are or you aren’t. I think the issue people don’t understand is that for us artists, this is our life’s work. We would die for our music. However, this new digital age of music has definitely helped in providing a major platform for artists to showcase their crafts.
What are some of your influences? If you were to tell someone about your music who hasn’t heard it – how would you want it described?
I’ve always been inspired by artists like Amy Winehouse, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin to name a few. What always intrigued me was how you could hear the passion in their voice. Their voices paint such incredibly interesting pictures and are serious works of art. My sound is influenced, but authentic. I’ve loved pop music for as long as I can remember, but in making great songs I look to add things no one else is using. My voice is my instrument, so I use it to make unique sounds throughout my work. The songs are very vocal based and I love using glitches in the post production, reversed vocals, and in some cases I’ll use it to substitute another instrument.
Have you ever done anything using your musical abilities to convince a girl to go out with you?
I wrote this one song a while back for a girl I was seriously crushing on, but she found love with someone else before I was able to find the right lyrics to perform it for her!
When can we expect to hear a full album from you?
It’s all coming very soon. I promise you, it’ll be worth the wait.
Where can we find out more about you? Social media links?
You can find me on all social medias! My Instagram is @nicktangorra and my Snapchat is @nickytanggzzzz, but pretty soon you’ll be able to find me everywhere.
