Premiere: Kappekoff Shares “Warmth (feat. Jimmy Smash) ” Single
Lush, sophisticated soft rock and chilled, mellow nu-disco will feature on Kappekoff’s upcoming album, Old Spring.
Behind the name Kappekoff stands bassist and producer Magnus Falkenberg from Oslo. The music is related to the electronic Oslo-disco made famous by artists such as Lindstrøm and Todd Terje, where Falkenberg blends pop music, jazz, improvisation, and electronic music. In 2016, the single “All Day Long” was released, a track that was shared so many times on Spotify that it reached second place on Spotify’s Global Viral 50 list, a list that shows “…the most shared, trending tracks across the entire World.” The track was nominated for hit of the year at Norwegian music magazine GAFFA.
With the third album New Spring, Kappekoff slowed down the tempo and explored the jazz-oriented outskirts of the hip-hop landscape, with guest artists like Ivan Ave and Stephanos Yowhannes. The upcoming Old Spring, which is the second album in a two-part project, showcases the more dancefloor friendly side of Kappekoff, with nods to yacht rock, in addition to jazz and improvisation. Both albums feature a number of guest artists. On Old Spring, Kappekoff is joined by Ragnhild og, Neon Ion, Thomas Busch and rapper Pasha.
Kappekoff on the track, “I wrote “Warmth” during the hot days of Oslo summer. My studio gets extremely hot in July, and I had recently bought a Warm Audio compressor—it felt only fitting to name the track after that warmth.
Production-wise “Warmth” is also the first song where I blended two distinct bass lines, recorded on two separate bass guitars, to create a dynamic, layered groove in the chorus.
The track features the talented duo Jimmy Smash on vocals and additional production, adding even more depth to the mix. As the colder months approach, I hope “Warmth” will bring you the heat.”
FEATURE INTERVIEW:
What was your inspiration when writing “Warmth”? Did you face any challenges while creating this single?
It was inspired by the hot summer in Oslo. I started writing “Warmth” when my Mac crashed due to the heat in my studio. There are no windows in my studio, so it gets really intense during the hot days! The heat while creating this song was really challenging, but at the same time, it was inspiring.
Are there any specific lyric choices you made that you feel really stand out?
All the lyrics were written by Håvard from Jimmy Smash, and they focus on having an internal battle with oneself, reminding us to take one minute at a time.
How was it collaborating with Jimmy Smash?
It’s always fun to work with Jimmy Smash. I often play bass on their tracks, so it’s quite natural to collaborate on my own tracks as well. They never seem to meet deadlines, though! Haha!
