FEATURE INTERVIEW:
Are there any personal experiences or stories behind “Difference”?
Absolutely….The song was inspired by a relationship I was in during my last year of medical school. I think most people can relate to falling in love with someone and then slowly realizing that the love you once shared with that person is fading fast. The inspiration for the song is rooted in navigating love when the end feels inevitable and you arrive at the question…What’s the difference if you stay…or if you leave? When you can already see the end on the horizon.
What do you hope listeners take away from the single?
When I wrote the song I remember wrestling with the idea of how powerful the little things in life are. The small day to day interactions that we share with the people we love can drastically impact the trajectory of our love. Particularly, the relationships we share with the people we love are built on the small interactions we have on a day to day basis. What I hope people take from the single is to refocus on the small interactions between the people we love the most. A quick call to say I love you, a kiss on the cheek before you go to work, the small things matter the most. Often times the smallest things we do have the biggest impact on the people we love. I hope listeners remember to deeply love the one you love before it’s too late.
Are there any songs on ‘Alignment’ that hold a special meaning for you?
I would say “Difference” and “I’ll Cry With You” hold special meaning to me. During the pandemic I started singing covers and when a few of them went viral I started written original music. These two songs were some of the first original songs I wrote and performed. It’s taken a long time to get them ready for the world but I feel like the wait has been worth every second.
How do you think being on “The Masked Singer” has affected your career or public perception?
The Masked Singer was hands down one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. To put it in perspective I went from doing Spine Surgery on a Monday and four days later I was in a giant serpent costume singing on stage in front of millions of people across America. It was a really surreal experience all the way around.
Whenever I’m at the hospital taking care of patients people usually comment on the Masked Singer. Oftentimes, I’m dealing with patients who are going through very difficult, painful, and life threatening conditions which can obviously be a burden. When patients bring up my experience on the Masked Singer it’s usually a happy moment. Whenever music is brought up, I get to connect with patients in a deeper way than most other doctors. I never really intended to pursue music at a young age but during medical school I realized that medicine can only go so far in healing a person. It was then that I realized that medicine and surgery are meant to heal the body, but music, is meant to heal the soul. From that moment on, I decided to dedicate my life to both music and medicine.
