Premiere: David Steinhart Announces New LP, Shares “It’s Just Not Set Up That Way” Single + Video

Today, David Steinhart releases his latest single, “It’s Just Not Set Up That Way”. This single kicks off with a catchy, upbeat rhythm from a vibrant synth and driving drums, that instantly drawing you in. The verses feature smooth, soulful vocals that tell a story of heartache, blending a sense of energy with a touch of melancholy.

David on the track, “This song has a different structure than most of my songs. Instead of a verse/chorus/bridge structure, this song has more of a tag line that it opens and closes each verse with, almost like a blues song, though the chord structure is definitely not blues inspired.

The lyric came to me very quickly after my father passed. I had the thought that no matter how much I loved and revered him, I was not going to see him again. There’s a bit of a spiritual bent to some of the songs I’ve written about friends that have passed. When my dad died, I felt strangely grounded in the here and now.”

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

What was your inspiration when writing “It’s Just Not Setup That Way”?

The song was inspired by my dads passing in January of this year. He was a big influence on just about everyone he knew and certainly on me.  We had a great relationship and a great friendship as well. I’ve written about death a fair amount over the years, particularly on The Furious Seasons 2019 album La Fonda, which was about the life and death of a dear friend. On that album I tried to paint a picture of his circumstances and our friendship without drawing any conclusions or making judgements.  When my dad died I had this overaching feeling of finality.  It’s Just Not Set Up That Way is the answer to the question “will we see each other again” and in my mind I had the thought that we are here and then we are gone for good. I appreciate that I may feel differently down the line.

Are there any specific lyric choices you made that you feel really stand out?

There are two things about this lyric that stand out.  Firstly, I use the the lyric “I won’t see you again/I’m sure of it’/it’s just not set up that way” as both the intro of the verse and the tail end of it. Almost like a call and answer blues lyric.  The lyric serves as a chorus and an intro to the verses at the same time. Also, I draw a line in the sand in this lyric which I usually shy away from; “all the beauty/all the loss/all the churches/all the mosques/all the wrings/all the ways that we pray/ I won’t see you again/I’m sure of it/it’s just not set up that way”.

What are you most excited for on your upcoming album?

This is my first solo album in over 20 years, that ‘s pretty exciting.  It’s also the first album with a full band in nearly 10 years. I’d been playing and making records wth my acoustic trio The Furious Seasons for a long while. That music was very much rooted in folk, where the new album feels like pure pop to me..
