Maya J’an Turns Emotional Limbo Into Art With “blindfaith county”
For years, Maya J’an worked behind the scenes as a songwriter. She co-wrote Aqyila’s “Bloom,” which won Contemporary R&B Recording of the Year at the 2025 JUNO Awards, and collaborated with artists like SAINt JHN, Justine Skye, and Pharrell. Still, she had yet to release music under her own name.
That changed last summer when she shared a demo of “cul-de-sac” on social media. Fans quickly encouraged her to officially release it, which she eventually did. Then came “pocket knife,” followed by “new june.” Now, those singles and three additional tracks come together on her debut EP, “blindfaith county,” out via Soulpower/Warner Records.

The body of work revolves around a fictional place of her own creation, which is, in her words, where “you end up when you believe in something without exactly knowing why.” In this world, everyone is waiting for something or someone they believe will complete them. Each song reveals a different corner of the county, gradually piecing together its emotional landscape. In that sense, the EP unfolds like an ensemble film such as Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia (1999) or David Byrne’s True Stories (1986).
At its core, “blindfaith county” is about emotional paralysis and the difficulty of letting go. The record becomes the place you arrive at when you continue wanting someone you know is wrong for you. The project’s central tension lies between intention and repetition. She makes lists of good choices, then repeats the same bad ones anyway, because stumbling over the same block is, unfortunately, all too human.
For Maya, this concept is the place where you learn to rest anyway, even on something sharp and dangerous. Across the project, desire and self-destruction exist side by side, but so does resilience. Over time, the wounds harden into something protective, leaving behind a version of yourself that can no longer be easily broken.
That resilience also appears in the smaller details woven throughout the EP. “depends,” which now has an accompanying visualizer, may be her most direct track, while “cul-de-sac” has surpassed 1.9 million streams thanks to its deeply personal connection to her hometown of Pasadena and the devastation caused by the 2025 fires.
Every Maya J’an song begins as a raw journal entry before evolving into something immersive and cinematic. “blindfaith county” feels vivid and familiar, reflecting both Maya J’an’s honesty and her strength as a songwriter.
