Marte Eberson Shares “Start Over Again” Single Out Today via Oslo Records, More New Music Coming Soon
“Start Over Again” is the brand new single from acclaimed Norwegian composer, pianist, and vocalist Marte Eberson, formerly of Highasakite. The song’s poignant lyrics explore themes of nostalgia and longing for a simpler time and the tune richly blends cinematic rock with indie pop.
Marte reflected on writing the track, saying, “Sometimes I look at pictures from when I was younger—whether from my childhood, teenage years, or just a couple of years ago—and feel a sense of longing. A longing for a time when life felt less complicated, less stressful, and when my friends, my family, and I had more time. That time passed so quickly, and I wish I had realized how much I should have appreciated it. Suddenly, I’m ‘grown up,’ and I don’t know how it happened. The days and years blur together, everything moves faster and faster. It would be so nice to start over, to begin again, to savor that time more, to slow down and take it all in.”
Don’t think this is all you’re hearing from Marte Eberson this year – she is gearing up to release a full length album this fall. Sharing her thoughts on the upcoming songs, Marte says, “The compositions and lyrics are inspired by the thoughts and emotions that come to me while sitting by the ocean — waves of old memories and hopes for the future washing over me. The dark and the light, the highs and lows of the waves, the cold and the warmth.”
Marte promises that her upcoming album will be her most personal yet. She is producing the album herself, in collaboration with Lars Voldsdal (Madrugada/Sivert Høyem, Hellbillies, Turbonegro, Claudia Scott, among others).
FEATURE INTERVIEW:
The lyrics of Start Over Again express a deep sense of nostalgia. Was there a specific moment or memory that sparked the idea for this song?
It wasn’t a specific event really. I’ve been meditating quite a bit over the past year, after I had a concussion. During meditation there’s a lot of focus on being in the present, and not thinking about the past or the future. It made me think about how much energy and time I’ve actually spent thinking about the past and future, history, worries or expectations. Then I thought to myself, I wish I had been more present in the past. That I had appreciated the time I was in. So the song is in a way a reminder to me that I should at least take care of the time I’m in right now. Not constantly yearning for something more, but appreciating what I’m experiencing right now.
You describe the album as being inspired by the ocean and the emotions it stirs. What is it about the sea that resonates so deeply with you?
The sea symbolizes so much to me. I think it is incredibly beautiful, but sometimes scary too. It is so lovely and calming to see the light sparkles on the surface, and at the same time a little disturbing to know that it is dark and deep below. You see something, but not everything. We do not know what is happening down there, while on the surface everything is very clear and distinct.
This reminds me of myself. That something about me is easy to interpret and understand, while something else is unclear and undefinable. For example, I can be very outgoing and confident, while at other times I am very introverted and insecure. I think that is why it resonates so well. I recognize myself in the sea.
What can fans expect from this album compared to your past work?
I think fans can experience this album as very authentic. These are perhaps clearer songs with clearer stories than anything I’ve made before. There is also more variation between the light and the dark. In addition, the soundscape is more acoustic and less produced than previous releases. The musicians get to play the song as it is. I want it to be perceived as a clear song, not just a sound.
