Lauren Burch and Her Rise on Social Media

At the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, many were lost as to what to do, or even how to live. With social activities decimated as a result of lockdowns and fear of illness, many turned to online venues to satisfy their needs for not just entertainment, but connection. For influencer and content creator Lauren Burch, this was no exception.

Born in a small town in northern Ontario to a single mother of three, Burch states that she began creating content during the beginning of the pandemic, particularly on popular social platforms. Her following in the cosplay and gaming communities has soared over the past few years. She currently holds 8.6 million followers on TikTok, with one of her most popular videos having reached 137 million views.

However, even with her popularity on sites like TikTok and YouTube, Burch says that it is important not to remain stagnant.

“With algorithms always changing, it is important not to get too comfortable with a specific style of content. As creators, we must constantly try new things and adapt to the times.”

Burch is known for not just her cosplay videos, in which she does hauls on TikTok and YouTube, but also for her gaming content.

A Following Through Twitch

Live gaming has been popularized by the advent of streaming websites, with streamers on platforms such as Twitch reaching new audiences in ways never thought possible. Lauren Burch is one of hundreds, perhaps thousands of streamers who use the social media platform to reach new audiences and connect with her followers. With 113,000 followers on Twitch alone, Lauren can be found playing games such as Alan Wake, Fortnite, and Pokémon, chatting with followers in hour-plus long streams, or even creating content that some might find humorous, such as a stream where she did 200 jumping jacks.

A Shift to Television

Even with her cosplay and Twitch endeavors, Burch isn’t someone who solely uses social media platforms to make herself known. Though she’s been in a few TV productions, music videos, and plays, her biggest role to date came when she played the role of Cassie in the Canadian TV series “Letterkenny.” Since then, Burch has worked to consistently improve herself in every capacity. This dedication has paid off, and she’s received the Millionaire Milestone Award by Creators Inc. for her work. Burch cites her popularity through social media as part of her success.

“Through social media, I was able to gain recognition that wasn’t directly available to me,” she says.

She adds that she would love to get into the movie industry, as it has always been something she enjoys. She also aspires to do more serious projects in the future, perhaps in television or theatre.

Lauren Burch’s rise to internet celebrity has shown that circumstances, however dire they may be, can have bright points within them. Through the battle of the COVID-19 pandemic, Burch has been one of many who utilized the internet to make not just a name for themselves, but launch new careers as well.
