Interview: Déyyess and the unbearable longing of “Claire” EP

Déyyess draws rightful comparisons to great songstresses of our time such as Halsey and Lana del Rey, and between her hypnotic vocals and high-caliber songwriting, you can easily tell why the Canterburry-based artist is given and owed such praise.

This past St. Valentine’s Déyyess debuted her first EP, titled “Claire”, a brutally honest  and no less touching exploration of heartbreak and of unrequited love and emotional chaos, especially in the queer scene. Each track captures the raw intensity of wanting someone who’s just out of reach, mixing vulnerability with a punchy indie-rock vibe. The lyrics hit hard, reflecting everything from secret crushes to the frustration of loving a friend who doesn’t feel the same.

Listen HERE.

With its dreamy yet gritty sound, the EP creates a mood that pulls you in, making you feel every pang of desire and heartache. It’s a sonic journey through the highs and lows of infatuation, wrapped in catchy hooks and relatable storytelling.

But if you want a deeper insight into “Claire”, look no further than today’s interview with the Artist herself, who not only touches upon these topics with us, but also tells us a few more cool details about her work and her plans, check it out:

A debut EP is an amazing milestone for an artist! How are you feeling?

A whirlwind of emotions! I can’t believe it’s out!! It’s an amazing feeling but the most amazing thing is  seeing how many people have resonated with the songs. Hearing people’s stories and their own personal Claire experiences has been honestly incredible and it’s just so insane to me that I get to do this for a living!

What lessons are you taking away from the whole process?

Work with people you love and who truly understand you as a person and believe in your vision. Working with Bluegirl has been a dream and has been a big part of why the music feels so special. She really gets me on a deep level.

What are you most looking forward to about your first-ever headline performance at The Lower Third?

Meeting the fans ! I set up a discord channel when I first released Claire back in August 2024 for so long they’ve existed online. So many are making their way to the headline and I’m so excited to see them in real life and to sing all the songs with them ! <3 Also it being my debut headline show is crazy, this has always been a big dream of mine since I was young!! 12 year old me would be screaming right now.

How do you approach songwriting? Is it always very personal or do you try to get into different headspaces?

It’s always very personal. I’m in love with this one girl who is never going to love me back and it’s hard to come to terms with. So I guess my headspace is always her.

“if i was ur Boy” is an amazing track! It’s got these mid-90s alt-rock vibes that really sell it. Did you have any particular inspirations in that vein when working on this track?

Thank you! I’m glad you’re loving it! The track actually started off super indie! Think The Sundays jangly guitar, Soccer Mommy vibes! But the more it progressed and the more we wrote it really started to lean into the pop world so we let her do her thing and it felt more natural to let he loose into that space.

Unrequited love leads to a strange grieving process… how do you cope?

I simply do not.

Although your career is technically just beginning, how do you feel about your sound today and where do you feel it’s headed to? What kind of emotions and memories do you want to ignite in your audience?

My sound has never felt more authentic. I’ve been doing this for a long time and I think it’s important to note. Being an artist isn’t an overnight job. It takes time, it takes learning, rejection and failure and that’s what really shaped me as an artist. It’s taken me a few years to get to this point and for the first time I actually feel like an artist and like this could be the start of everything I’ve dreamed of and worked towards.

Emotions and memories, I have this core memory of reading through my comments and someone had posted saying how Claire reminded them of the first girl they ever loved back in 1981 and how they still think about her everyday – I think to me that kind of emotion and memory is what I want to ignite in my audience. Something so strong that it transports you back to a particular moment.

What can fans expect next from you after “Claire”? Are there any new projects or collaborations in the works?

I’m so excited for what’s next! So many things planned and I truly cannot wait to share more music and to tour, meet all the fans and live in this Claire world forever.
