FEATURE INTERVIEW:
How did you get your start in the music industry? Tell us your story.
I’ve wanted to be a singer since I was a little girl. My parents always had music playing throughout my childhood, everything from Mariah Carey to traditional Eritrean Music. Once I got a karaoke machine, I was obsessed. Eventually, my 3rd grade music teacher offered an opportunity to sing at a show outside of school.
I started posting on YouTube with the help of my dad, and from then on, I was doing gigs and recording music. My older sisters joined me to form a girl-group. We did covers and performed all around Seattle. Eventually, we ended up semi-finalists on America’s Got Talent and began touring. That lasted for over a decade before my sisters decided to pursue different career paths. I started working on my own artistry to find what felt right for me. So It’s been a journey, but in ways, it still feels brand new.
What is a fond memory you have of growing up in Seattle?
I have great memories growing up in the greater Seattle area. I went to Renton High School, and I just remember buying pizza from across the street and having the best conversations with close friends on the big stairs out front. It’s simple but those are the kinds of moments I’m appreciating most. Time slows down when I’m home.
From what you can remember, what was it like going on the show “America’s Got Talent” at such a young age?
It was honestly a whirlwind. I didn’t even get a chance to feel nervous before performing because so much was going on. The cameras and interviews were a lot to process at that age, but I also had a real interest in seeing how big shows are put together. It was like a little taste of a dream, so parts are unforgettable.
Since you blew up from doing covers, what is your current favorite song to cover?
My favorite cover to perform live is definitely “Love On the Brain” by Rihanna. I like to ask people to sing it with me and it brings a really playful energy into the space. I feel like I get to connect with everyone in the audience personally. We love Rihanna & we sing our hearts out together!
If you could collab with any R&B singer, who would it be? What type of song would you two create?
Right now, I think it would be Victoria Monet. Her ear for music is out of this world and she’s finally getting the recognition that she has worked so hard for. I’d love to get real alternative-R&B with her and make a harmony-heavy song.
In 2023 you released your debut EP “The End” that features 8 songs. Talk to us about creating this project and the first song you’re playing someone who’s never heard this project before.
“The End” was therapeutic to put together. I had been recording music for so long, I was just ready to let those songs go & close that chapter. At the same time, I had the best time finishing it up and adding my touches. I rewrote, recorded, and submitted new verses close to the deadline. So it was a bit of a scramble but a great time. The first song I’d play someone would be “Eyes for You” It’s a really smooth & sexy R&B song that’s a little more vocal than the others.
Are you currently working on a new full body of work? From what you can share, tell us about what we can expect from it and how it will differ from “The End” EP.
Yes, I’m working on another project! It’s a collection of songs I really love. It was a very collaborative experience so I think you can expect more versatility and experimentation than what was on “The End”.
When it comes to releasing visuals, can we expect more music videos from you in the future? If so, will you take the hands-on approach with creative direction?
Absolutely. I’ve always been a visual person so I can’t wait to bring those ideas to life. I’ll always want to be heavily involved in things like that. I like to see projects from beginning to end and pour effort into them, especially for music I hold so close to my heart. Songs come from such a pure place, it’s important to preserve that essence through every step of the creative process.
When it comes to beauty, what are a few products that will always be a part of your routine?
My beauty products have changed a lot over the years, but I’m pretty consistent with my go-to’s. I like to have a de-saturated dark brown lip liner on me. I don’t care what brand if the shade looks right. I need a nude matte lip because sometimes, that can double as a bronzer or blush.
And I can’t live without Vaseline, like just the regular 100% pure white petroleum jelly. I’ve had it in my bag since middle school. I’ll use it for my lips or a quick glow on my body or face. I can probably do a whole look with just those 3 products!
I love your thin 90’s style eyebrows, have you always rocked this look or have your brows evolved over the years?
Thank you! My eyebrows have definitely evolved dramatically over the years. I’ve tried every eyebrow size under the sun but I have a naturally smaller eyebrow. I do love them straighter though so that’s probably one thing that won’t change too much.
Walk us through a great self-care day.
A great self-care day would be a wash-day for my hair. I’d probably take a walk, have a lot of good food & deep conversations with someone I love. Drinking lots tea and probably have some studio time just to make me extra happy.
When you’re not working on music, what are some things you’re doing for fun?
To be honest, I spend SO much time doing music for fun. But sometimes, I’ll read or cook. I’m also new to LA, so I like exploring food spots or taking drives.
What hair-care products are your favorite to use?
I just started using Chi Silk Infusion. I don’t know where I’ve been all these years but I love how it makes my hair feel!
What can we expect from Haben this year?
A lot of music coming out, and many more shows. I feel really excited about what I’m working on and I can’t wait to show people these new vibes.
