Your Favorite 90s Supermodels Just Joined the Balmain Army
When you think about Balmain, chances are you think of Kylie Jenner, Gigi Hadid, and other millenial it-girls whose “strut around the world like they own it” attitude makes for the perfect pairing with Olivier Rousteing’s super sexy, sleek and luxurious clothing.
But Gigi and Kylie weren’t the first badass, jet-setting supermodels to hit the scene. That honor belongs to the ’90s supers: a crop of leggy Amazons that includes Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, and Claudia Schiffer.
And now, in a perfect twist we should have seen coming, Balmain is featuring those ’90s supers in its spring campaign.
Shot in black and white by Steven Klein (who shot two of our favorite celebrity editorials of 2015), Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer are absolutely stunning as the faces of Balmain’s Spring collection.
In a statement to Vogue, Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing said:
“It’s a new chapter for Balmain. Sometimes people are confused and think it’s all about social media and Instagram. Balmain has a deep soul, and it’s not only about followers. It’s about dreams and love, and I think with this campaign I’m going to show that and go back to its roots. This campaign is about what makes me love fashion, and these three women are exactly that. These three women are what made me love fashion yesterday, make me love fashion today, and are going to make me love fashion in the future.
“All the people who love Balmain have this nostalgia of the power of fashion in the ’90s when models were iconic—and this is always what I push. . . . When you love Balmain, you love Cindy, you love Naomi, and you love Claudia…I felt like I was dreaming as I was watching the photo shoot, because I knew it was going to be something iconic that I would never forget.”
If this won’t help us all get through winter, I don’t know what will.
