#ManCrushMonday: Jesse Marco Talks Romantic Mix Tapes and NYC Girls

Here at Galore, we have a thing for sexy DJs. Maybe it’s that effortless brow sweat they have when spinning all night long, or maybe it’s the fact that they’re one of the few types of guys who will still make us a mix tape (or at least a personalized Spotify playlist).

Jesse Marco is no exception. Jesse Marco is a native New Yorker that’s been tearing up the DJ scene at festivals and nightclubs alike. But Jesse works closely with many of fashion’s big names too, he recently created an exclusive mix for Alexander Wang’s Tokyo store opening this past fall, and previously helped Tom Ford choose music for his Milan Fashion Week show.

Have you ever made a mix-tape for someone? If so, who and why?

Yeah sure, one of my ex girlfriends. She said she hated it, but rightfully so! It was when I first started DJing and it was all awful, jumbled up mixes and bad gangster rap songs, but I guess I thought it was romantic at the time.

You’ve DJed for many fashion industry events, notably working with Alexander Wang and Tom Ford, how is working for a fashion client different than playing a nightclub?

I get asked this question a lot. There isn’t much difference to be honest. The crowds want to hear what’s new, and you mix in the classics with that. I guess depending on who the crowd is can change the music a bit, but a classic is a classic — especially in New York.

What’s a stereotype about DJs that you’ve found to be completely bogus?

That we’re all drug addicts.

What’s the best thing about NYC girls? How easy is it to spot a girl that just moved to NY?

Probably by her willingness to impress the wrong people, I’d say, and her style. Real NY girls have a great attitude, and aren’t afraid to call bullshit.

What’s your biggest dating deal breaker?

A girl’s gotta be into creative shit.

What’s your favorite place to DJ?

Either Tokyo, Germany, or New York.

What song should Galore add to our sex playlist?

How can a girl get your attention from the DJ booth?

Back flip your way into my heart. That, or bring me spaghetti.

Could you ever date a girl with a completely different taste in music? Why or why not?

Yeah absolutely. I couldn’t ever date a girl that knew all the words to “Liquid Swords” by GZA because she would probably be wearing Wallabees and would probably sound like Ghostface Killah. That’s not a look I go for if you’re a girl I’m thinking about dating. No offense to all you girls out there if that’s your thing, though.

You’ve cited your parents’ music collection as a huge inspiration for you, what are the top five records you couldn’t live without?

1. Stevie Wonder- Signed Sealed Delivered
2. Michael Jackson – Beat it
3. Taana Gardner – Heartbeat
4. Led Zeppelin-Stairway to Heaven
5. The Smiths – How Soon is Now
