What were (are?) you addicted to?

Brief explanation of what the drug is/does/how it feels?

Coke gets you hyped. Like a short-term burst of energy. It makes you feel more confident and it gives you a bit of a body high too.

When did you start using? Can you describe your first experience?

I started doing coke when I was about 20. I was going to a rave with my friends and they had bought a gram. I had seen them done it before but had never tried it myself. I decided to just give it a shot, because I’m down for trying anything once. I didn’t really feel anything the first couple of bumps, but later in the night I could definitely feel the effects, it felt awesome.

What made you start using?

I was big into the rave scene for awhile, coke was always readily available and helped you keep partying.

What are the negative side effects of using the drug?

I always got really bad coke nose the next day, where my nose would constantly run and always felt congested. It also causes weight loss, irritability, aggression, and over time paranoia.

At what point did you realize you had a problem?

Well at first I was only doing it at raves, then only on weekends, but then it was every day. I couldn’t get myself going unless I had a bump. I lost a job because of it. My best friend was the one who sat me down and said I needed to get help.

What type of help did you seek?

I went to Narcotics Anonymous.

Can you describe the rehab experience/recovery process?

It was not pleasant, I can tell you that much. My best friend was amazing though, she went with me almost every day the first month or so. I owe her my life and couldn’t be more grateful. I still go to meetings everyday.

How long have you been sober?

I’ve been sober two years now, but I still think about it now and again, it never really leaves your mind once you’ve been an addict.

How is your life different now that you’re sober?

So much better. I have a new job, made some new friends out of the party scene and just feel all around more healthy and alert.

Is there anything you do on a daily basis to stay sober?

If I ever feel like I may relapse after a hard day or something I go and tell my best friend and we’ll go for a walk or something.

If you could go back and tell yourself anything what would it be?

I’m not sure there’s anything I could tell myself to change any outcome. I’m pretty sure it would have gotten into my life somehow.
