FEATURE INTERVIEW:
You transitioned from being a model and actress to venturing into music. What inspired you to make this leap, and how has the journey of discovering music been for you?
Well, honestly for me, it has been more about transitioning into actually having the courage to put my dreams first. I’ve been singing my whole life. For my 6th or 7th birthday, all I asked for was the PlayStation game SingStar, and I would sing every day for hours. When I quit ballet at 14, I told my mom I wanted to dedicate my time to singing. However, we faced a tough financial situation, and my mom could no longer afford classes. When I started modeling at 17, I became the main provider for my family, so I continued with what was working. I loved modeling and had fun, but music seemed more like a dream. Three years ago, I decided to start my brand LOBA to express myself and find the stability to pursue singing because I realized that it was my true passion.
In a world where social media dominates, how do you manage the pressure of imposed beauty standards? Have you ever felt that you need to conform to those standards?
I definitely fall victim to the beauty standards instilled in us by social media. Both social media and modeling contributed to my struggles with an eating disorder. Now, with the real world feeling like a fantasy due to our phones, I try to take a lot of time away from social media. Exploring myself through dance has been a huge way to reconnect with my body and stay active in a manner that feels authentic and not for anyone else.
Many influencers, models, and musicians have been accused of lacking authenticity. How do you balance staying true to yourself while also meeting industry and follower expectations?
I think it’s hard to be unique and original in such an interconnected world. I spend a lot of time off my phone and seek out interests that aren’t trendy. I enjoy watching both unpopular and beloved movies, as well as listening to older music. Attending theater shows and dancing encourages self-expression in the real world, allowing me to connect with myself before engaging with others. I believe things can be trendy because many people connect over common interests, which is a valuable human experience. Enjoying both sides and recognizing that everyone has depth helps me navigate authenticity.
With your Spanish and Indonesian roots, how have these cultures influenced your style and aesthetic sense? Is there a tradition that inspires your work?
I’m a Spanish and Indonesian, born in Amsterdam, but I grew up in Spain. My upbringing significantly shaped my tastes, especially being raised by my mom, who is Spanish/French and had a strong passion for Americana culture. Her favorite films, like Thelma and Louise, and her love for Dolly Parton influenced me deeply. I appreciate both cultures, and while my Indonesian roots were something my mom sought to explore, I wish I knew more about them. I hope to delve into that more in my work.
With a meteoric career in fashion and now in music, how do you balance these two facets of your life? Has one offered you more creative opportunities than the other?
I like to think these two facets are intertwined; I couldn’t have one without the other. My desire to make music pushed me into the public eye, while my fashion career has enabled me to pursue music creatively. I express myself in both arenas and have fun doing so. I’ve always sought a creative role in fashion, and I’m fortunate to creative direct many of my modeling shoots.
Music, however, has opened my eyes to new creative avenues. The integration of songwriting allows me to express not just visuals but my true sentiments. Writing music feels like entering a different frequency, akin to being a kid again, where I can daydream and express a range of emotions, from desire to heartbreak to anger.
In your music, what message do you hope to convey to your listeners? Is there a particular theme you would like to delve into?
I have always admired female artists; being a fan of strong women has inspired me, especially growing up with a single mother. My main aspiration is to embody the strong girl I dreamed of being when I was six. As I transition from girlhood to womanhood, I want to explore who I am—sexually, spiritually, and emotionally—and have fun with life. Whether it’s creating art from joy or sadness, I am deeply dedicated to expressing myself and celebrating all of life’s experiences through my music.
You are a role model for your Instagram followers. What is your number one beauty tip that you consider essential for those looking to enhance their own beauty?
Beauty tips are deeply personal because everyone expresses themselves differently. However, one thing I’ve learned over time is to lean into who I am naturally and channel that to its highest potential rather than trying to look like someone else.
What are your best fashion tips and hacks for your followers, and which brands do you consider your favorites in this field?
My best fashion tip is to always incorporate an unexpected element into your outfit, like wearing shoes or jewelry you wouldn’t typically choose. Personalizing your signature style is great too! Currently, I love what Galliano was doing at Margiela, and I’m sad to see him go. Saint Laurent is forever chic and sexy, while Miu Miu works well for day-to-day wear. For times when I want to feel hot, I turn to JPG, and for a feminine touch, I adore Vivienne Westwood. I’m also a huge fan of emerging brands and designers like Dilara, Mowalola, and everything Dimitra is creating.
As a public figure, you have a great influence on your followers. What is the most important message you would like to convey to them through your music and social media?
I’m realizing the importance of taking control of my life and doing what makes me happy. I hope to inspire others to explore their own paths and not feel pressured to conform. It’s vital to pursue your dreams at your own pace; there is no expiration date on creativity. I’ve learned that you can create and live your dream life at any stage, even starting new hobbies or careers later in life.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received, and how do you apply it to your life?
The best advice I’ve received is a well-known prayer: “Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Its power extends beyond recovery programs and serves as a reminder for everyone. This wisdom has helped me with relationships and personal challenges, allowing me to recognize what I can control, let go of others’ projections, and even influence my art.
