Astrid’s “Breathe” Has Us in the Mood for Spring
At the age of 15, Astrid S came in the top 5 on Norway’s version of American Idol and has been stealing hearts here in the U.S. ever since.
Today she launches a new song called “Breathe” that totes gets us in the mood for spring. You’ve probably heard her super catchy, hauntingly beautiful track “Hurts So Good” on a rainy day in a chic hotel lobby and stared longingly out the window… or at least I did. Find out more about Astrid and peep some exclusive pics below.
How long have you been making music?
I started writing songs when I was 16 years old. I had just bought a guitar and started listening to John Mayer. I think his album “Continuum” is what made me want to start make my own music. I listened to it and thought, “I want to do that!”
How would you describe your sound?
I would describe my sound as electronic pop with an urban twist.
Tell us about why you wrote the song “Hurts So Good.”
“Hurts So Good” is about that feeling you get from loving someone so much it just hurts. It could be towards a friend, a boyfriend/girlfriend or someone in your family. You make sacrifices for the ones you care about. I think and hope a lot of people can relate to the feeling I’m referring to in the song. For me, this song is about a relationship where you’re not supposed to see each other. But you can’t help it. And every time you meet you get this torn feeling. It simply hurts so good.
What topics are you interested in singing about?
It could be something personal, or something my friend talked to me about, or it could even be something I saw in a movie. There’s no limits. Honestly I haven’t experienced that much in my 20 year long life. So the puppy love or little drama I’ve been through I some times have to exaggerate. But that’s sometimes the fun part! I think what’s important for me is just to find something I and everyone else can relate to. We all go through the same things.
Dream collab?
First artist that came to mind is The Weeknd. But you remember the Rihanna and Shakira collab? Something like that with maybe Zara Larsson. Or this new amazing artist called Dua Lipa! A girl collab would be fun.
So you’re from Norway. What fashion statement are the Norwegian cool kids obsessed with right now?
In Oslo we are very into sneakers. But who isn’t? I see a lot of clean, laid-back and urban styled girls and boys. Everyone has their own twist, though.
How would you describe your style?
I love the clean, laid-back and urban look. And a little bit sporty. I like to wear workout clothes as everyday clothes.
Do you only sing in English or do you sing in Norwegian too?
I only sing in English as an artist. I grew up singing Norwegian and Swedish songs, but there was always American music on the radio. I was a huge fan of Britney Spears. It’s interesting, but I find it more natural to sing in English than in Norwegian. Especially when I write. When it’s in English it kind of creates this wall. I would feel really naked singing a song about how I feel in Norwegian.
