FEATURE INTERVIEW:

How do you relate to your character Ashley Banks on “Bel-Air,” and what aspects of her personality do you find most intriguing?
One key difference between us is that she is very outspoken, while I tend to be more reserved. It takes me a little time to warm up in social settings, which might make me seem shy at first, but once I’m comfortable, I engage well. What truly intrigues me about Ashley is her confidence and assertive nature. She possesses a remarkable ability to enter a room and command attention effortlessly, showcasing her strong personality and leadership qualities.

What was your preparation process like for stepping into this iconic role, and did you draw inspiration from the original “Fresh Prince” series?
I did draw inspiration from the original “Fresh Prince” to, of course, keep the essence of it but I allowed myself to take on Ashley as my own to make sure she was relatable in modern times. Ultimately, my goal was to create a version of Ashley that not only pays homage to her origins but also stands on her own as a strong, independent character navigating life in modern times.

How has your character evolved from the beginning of the series to where you are now?
As Ashley comes of age, she navigates the complexities of her identity while coming to the realization that home relationships aren’t as perfect as she thought. Despite her youth, she becomes more confident and is growing into herself a lot. Her self-discovery involves exploring her attractions and even navigating her first romance.

What’s it like working with the rest of the cast, and can you share any memorable moments from the set?
My favorite moments are undoubtedly those when we are all together. One memorable scene was when Ashley, Carlton, and Will prepared breakfast for their parents; let’s just say we indulged in quite a bit of food during that shoot. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced in portraying your character, and how did you overcome it? So this season, Ashley got to tap into her musical side and it was definitely something out of my comfort zone. I don’t think I necessarily struggled with it but it’s something i’m not used to doing.

“Bel-Air” explores many significant themes. Which theme do you feel is most important, and why to you as an 18 year old teen?
The theme of owning who you are is the most important thing to me. This is a theme that is portrayed a lot through Ashley because she is not afraid to be herself and she is the true meaning of owning who you are. As an 18 year old this theme is important to me because throughout my teenage years, I’ve grown to just be myself and not change for anybody.

How has playing this role impacted you personally or professionally when it comes to going extra mile in acting?

I have definitely grown a lot while playing Ashley. I started the show when I was 14, going on 15, and over the past few seasons, playing this character has allowed me to open up and become emotionally vulnerable. It has helped me see things differently because her lifestyle is not necessarily the same as mine. It’s a beautiful experience to dig deep into a character who goes through so many different challenges. I love being open and really exploring what she may go through, as it has definitely opened my eyes to the world in many different ways.

What advice would you give 16 year old Akira?
If I could give advice to my younger self, it would be to be kind to myself. It’s essential to practice patience and hold myself accountable for my actions and decisions. I would remind myself that it’s perfectly okay to use my voice. There were times when I felt the need to let others fill in the blanks for me, but I’ve learned that I can articulate exactly what I want and need. My opinions and desires matter, and expressing them is a vital part of who I am.

How does it feel to be 18 and how did you spend your b-day?
I spent my 18th birthday relaxing at the spa with my loved ones. Spending time with my family is always special, especially since I seem to be quite busy these days. It feels good to chill out and
laugh with the people who know me best.

The show has a distinct style. How does your character’s fashion sense reflect her personality?

Fashion is a significant way for individuals to express themselves. It goes beyond just looking good. For Ashley, her clothing choices reflect not only her style but also who she is inside and how she feels at any moment.
