Britney Spears’ 6 Iconic VMA Performances
Last night, Britney Spears took the stage at the VMAs for a sixth time, performing a song with G-Eazy, and it was lit.
But last night wasn’t even her best VMA performance ever. Since 1999, you can watch her grow from a flirty student to a woman who knows how to work a python, if you know what I mean.
1. Britney Schools Our Asses On How To Dance (1999)
In 1999, Britney Spears was just starting her ascent toward pop princess status, so the VMAs invited her to perform, but only gave her half a performance slot.
Her backup dancers wore white turtlenecks and holographic pants, Britney wore a shiny crop top and matching pants, and performed a slowed down sexy version of her already super sexually charged song, “…Baby One More Time.”
After an extended dance break and some more ad-libbing, Britney ceded the stage to the other big pop sensation at the time, *NSYNC, and just like that a pop princess was born.
2. Ooops…Britney Can’t Get No Satisfaction (2000)
Artists make curious choices at award shows all the time, and Britney’s 2000 VMA performance was no exception.
Instead of going for the obvious and just performing one of her hits, Britney started things off by performing a brief snippet of one of the few low points on her second album, a cover of the classic Rolling Stones’ song “Satisfaction.” Luckily, then she gave the people what they wanted with a dance and hair flip-heavy rendition of “Oops…I Did It Again.”
3. Britney Slithers Around the Stage With a Python (2001)
Do you remember where you were when you watched Britney gyrate in the fake jungle with a python like it was the most natural thing a woman could do?
From watching this dance get recreated on Dancing With the Stars, I can tell you that managing to look at ease with a wild wrapped around your shoulders is not easy as Britney makes it look.
4. Britney Kisses a Girl, Seems to Like It (2003)
What began as a simple homage to Madonna turned into a brief three-way-kiss that nobody could stop talking about. But did you remember that Missy Elliot also took part in that performance? Or that Eminem could not have cared less about what was going on? There was a whooooooooole lot going on.
5. Britney Hits a Snag, Keeps on Dancing
Britney’s 2007 VMA performance didn’t go quite as well as she might have hoped, but you know what? She kept asking for more and look where Brit Brit is today.
Let that be a lesson for all of you.
Chumbawumba was right. When you get knocked down, you just have to get up again.
