Wonder Woman’s Creator Says She Is ‘Obviously’ Gay
We all know Wonder Woman is the only superhero worth paying attention to, thanks to her super-powered accessories and the fact that Lynda Carter was an O.G. style icon.
But did you know she was also a low-key queer icon from the jump?
Greg Rucka, one of the dudes behind Wonder Woman, told Comicosity that Wonder Woman was “obviously” toward the left on the gay-straight spectrum. And it all has to do with the fact that she grew up surrounded by other women.
“When you start to think about giving the concept of Themyscira its due,” Greg said, “the answer is, How can they not all be in same-sex relationships? Right? It makes no logical sense otherwise.”
He’s got a point.
Refinery 29 points out that quite a few other female superheroes identify as not totally straight, including Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Cat Woman. This is exciting in terms of representation, but our cynical side also has to point out that most creators of classic comic book characters were men. They might have been less concerned with equality and more concerned with imagining half-naked hot girls making out.
