Whale tailing is officially back because Kim Kardashian said so

Ohhhhh, yes. The whale tail is back, and I’m officially back on that whale tail train (although idk if I ever left)!

And not just because Kim Kardashian said so (in a vintage, 20+ year old Gucci thong, no less).

Even though Kim may influence or start up many trends (i.e. neon lime green is now the color of the season due to her wearing it ~524 days in a row in Miami), this isn’t why I’m stanning the whale tail comeback. Kim is merely reincarnating a trend that should have never died in the first place.

So many celebs before Kim K have paved the way to an iconic, sexy, and well-coordinated whale tail. Before Kim, many brave celebrities dared to expose their thongs in the name of fashion and style everywhere (I’m not joking, I seriously love the whale tail look).

But really, so many people are crediting Kim K for starting this trend, and I just can’t stand for it. To name a few who rocked this look before the Kardashian era even began: Heidi Klum, Cameron Diaz, Adriana Lima, Ashley Tisdale (wow, love this one), Britney damn Spears, Charlize Theron, Christina Milian, Courtney Cox, Fergie Ferg, Leighton Meester, Manny in “Degrassi,” the Olsen twins, Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton (ofc), Rihanna, and more.

The list could quite literally go on.

Now, it’s time to break down the common misconceptions of the ever-scandalous whale tail. When I told my ex I was writing this piece, he said, “Why is that ‘back in’? Isn’t it just when you bend over and your thong shows?”

Au contraire, mon amour.

It’s actually a purposeful style choice. An accidental whale tail is a different tale for a different time. Truly.

That’s why a purposeful whale tail is such a feat, though – only those who have serious balls are going to rock an accidental panty slip as a style choice. That’s why the whale tail is so iconic. That’s why we can’t look away!

If you can sport a whale tail, you can sport anything, and I commend you.

A whale tail is a dangerous and overtly fabulous way to change up your style, whether it’s with a sexy neon two piece set (à la Kim K) or with a plain pair of denim and a white tee. Basically, you can’t go wrong with a little panty peek-a-boo.

Also, I dare every woman to try out this comeback trend, because it’s more chic and more palatable than society lets you on to believe. Let’s all free the thong, especially since it pops out on its’ own most days anyway!

Oh, and those of you who have been living it up in a whale tail since the 90s? More power to you!

Whale tail on, gals! And not just because Kim K said so.
