Urias Faces New Worlds In “CARRANCA”, A Musical Manifesto About Freedom, Identity And Ancestral Strength

Urias returns with a lot to say. In “CARRANCA”, her new project, the artist presents a collection of songs that expand her own interpretation of Brazilian music, without losing the appetite for experimentation that has always driven her path. A songwriter with a steady hand, she leaves her signature on every track, weaving Afro-Brazilian references that speak directly to her identity and to the cultural heritage that shapes her.

Inspired by the mystical figure carved to ward off evil spirits, “CARRANCA” takes on that same symbolic function: it is protection, confrontation, and a spiritual shield. Throughout the record, Urias questions what it means to be free in a country marked by historical tensions, revisits her Blackness, summons spiritualities, and paints — with clarity — her vision of Brazil today: critical, sensitive, and restless.

The artist dives into themes that cut across her life and her generation, but without letting go of her impulse to move forward. The new album shows that she has not lost her desire to fly; on the contrary, her wings seem even sharper. Here, she moves with courage and purpose, turning lived experience into music — and music into a manifesto. With this project, Urias reaffirms her place among the most powerful, inventive, and necessary voices in the contemporary scene.

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

How did the collaborations on the project come to life?

Well, every collaboration was very carefully thought out. Even the storyteller, “Marcinha do Corinto”, was chosen specifically because it had to be her, because of her story. And the others, the boys, they just came along because they connect with different parts of the Black community, you know? In music, their music represents… each one of them represents a different style of Black Brazilian music.

When you look at everything you’ve achieved and all the people your art has touched, what kind of feeling does that bring up for you?

The feeling is kind of hard to describe… like, beyond a dream come true, because I dream big, but I never thought I would be right here, right now, you know? And it’s a happy feeling. There’s always a little weight of responsibility — it’s always there — but it’s satisfying to know that people are listening, being touched and expecting new things from me. And this last work was especially special, I would say, you know? Because people really connected to it right away. It had never been like this before. So I’m beyond grateful. I’m like full of joy, you know?

What’s the rhythm of your days like? Would you say you’re someone who enjoys having a routine?

As much as I try every inch of my time to have a routine, I couldn’t — like, I haven’t managed it yet — because everything is happening so fast, and there are so many different things to do, you know? I’m never doing the same thing at the same hour every day, so that’s hard. But there are things that I don’t give up on, like working out four days a week, having time with my dogs, rehearsal and dance. Those are always, always, always on my list of things to do during the day. They just happen at different parts of the day, and it always changes! So it’s hard to say I have a routine, but I wish I did.

With you sharing a close friendship with Pabllo, do you often exchange experiences and career advice with her?

We give each other advice and share experiences every time we meet. We’ve been friends for a long time now — I don’t even know, like, for over ten years!  And we sit down and we chat; it’s kind of part of our reality now. We share a lot of experiences about career and personal life as well.

What’s your favorite place in the world right now?

I think my favorite place in the world is home. I don’t know how to tell you this, but I’ve been feeling like I’ve found the place for me — and it’s my home, with my dogs, my family, and my boyfriend, and all around me are my friends. My friends all live nearby, so I think I can make this my favorite place, you know? I can always be at my favorite place. But I love traveling too — I love Pipa, which is in the north of the country. It’s amazing.

You’ve recently announced the dates for your new tour. Can we expect more shows next year? Is there a dream country or stage where you’d still love to perform?

We only released this year’s dates for now. But of course there’s going to be more next year — we’re gonna go around the country, I hope so at least. And I have a lot of dream stages and dream countries I’d like to go to on tour. I’d love to… I don’t know, hit the Latin Grammy stage like I told you, I dream big. I think I’m ready — and the music shows.
