UCLA BASKETBALL STAR KIKI RICE TALKS MARCH MADNESS, NEW DOCUSERIES & EXPLORING LA

If you’re a sports lover you definitely have already heard of UCLA Basketball star Kiki Rice! Kiki took time out of her busy schedule to sit down with us and discuss her life in LA, how she balances school, a social life and her first love basketball. If you want to know how she does it all, keep reading!

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

You were born in San Francisco but were raised in D.C. Talk to us about growing up in D.C. and what made you ultimately choose to go to college in California.

I chose UCLA because I love everything the program has to offer. I wanted to join a program that would allow me to compete at the highest level and ultimately win the first NCAA Championship in program history. My teammates, the staff, and the beautiful LA weather made my decision pretty easy!

Last summer you held a basketball clinic for young girls in Senegal with “The West Project”. What was this experience like and your favorite memory from it?

Last summer, me and my teammates had the incredible opportunity to travel to Senegal and host a basketball clinic for young girls and explore the country. It was a very rewarding experience on so many levels. My favorite memory from this experience was the connection I made with the girls as I taught them the fundamentals of basketball. Witnessing their enthusiasm, determination, and joy as they learned and played was truly inspiring. It reminded me of the universal language of sport and the power it has to bring people together, regardless of backgrounds or circumstances. It was a really special opportunity and a memory I will cherish forever.

Your new collaboration with Jordan, the “Air Jordan 38 Low “Cherry Blossom” launched not too long ago. How did this collaboration come about and what was the process of designing your shoe?

When I announced my partnership with Jordan, I wanted to show my appreciation for my teammates by gifting them exclusive footwear created by the brand.  Their reactions were priceless, but more importantly, being able to give back to my teammates in this way was incredibly fulfilling.

They’ve been there for me through thick and thin, pushing me to be the best player and person I can be. Their support and encouragement have played a significant role during my time at UCLA, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. So, sharing this moment with them and expressing my gratitude meant the world to me. It was a small token of appreciation for everything they’ve done for me, both on and off the court.

What is your favorite pair of Jordan shoes ever outside of the Air Jordan 38’s?

My favorite pair of Jordan shoes has to be the Jordan 4s. They have a classic and timeless design that looks good with any outfit I wear!

What do you love most about the UCLA women’s basketball team?

What I love most about my team is the perfect balance we strike between having fun and being competitive. Our team culture not only strengthens our chemistry on the court and pushes us to improve as basketball players, but also fosters strong bonds off the court.

How has your sophomore year of college been? Is there anything fun you’ve been doing outside of basketball?

My sophomore year of college has been great! Outside of basketball, I’ve been enjoying taking advantage of all that UCLA has to offer, making new friends, and exploring Los Angeles.

How was this past season for UCLA women’s basketball team? Talk to us about the highs and lows from your sophomore season.

We had a strong start, but then we hit a rough patch in the middle of the season. However, facing that adversity gave us the opportunity to grow and respond as a team, which turned out to be really beneficial for us. The highs and lows we experienced throughout the season have continued to shape us as a team and help us achieve our goals.

You are set to be featured in a new four-part docuseries, “Full Court Press” this year. Talk to us about what we can expect from it and what your experience being a part of it was like.

This docuseries is going to provide a deeper understanding of who I am, my background, my family, and the life I lead as a student and athlete at UCLA. The team has been filming me all season, and I am excited for everyone to see it come to life in May! This was a new experience for me, but over time, I became more comfortable with cameras capturing the good and challenging times I’ve experienced this year. “Full Court Press” premieres on May 11 and 12 on ABC and ESPN+.

What brands would you like to collaborate with in the future?

I do have a wish list of brands that I would love to work with in the beverage, beauty, personal care, food & snacks, tech, and many more. What is most important to me is aligning myself with brands that share similar values so that we can partner together authentically.

How do you balance your professional career, school and a social life? What tips do you have for any college athletes struggling to do the same?

Balancing basketball, school, and social life is all about time management. I prioritize by planning ahead and ensuring that my academic responsibilities and basketball commitments are met.

Additionally, I make sure to do things that I enjoy and that fill up my cup. This includes resting, going to the beach, and exploring LA.

For college athletes struggling with this balance, I would advise focusing on prioritizing tasks, scheduling effectively, and not neglecting personal time for self-care and socializing.

Let’s talk about your curly hair routine. What products do you use and how do you maintain your curls while playing basketball?

I’m currently using Shea Moisture leave-in conditioner, but I like trying out different curl products. When it comes to games, I tie my hair up and hope it stays lol – the high pony is my signature look!

Walk us through an average day in your life.

In season, my schedule includes morning practices, afternoon classes, traveling for games, fulfilling my brand partnership obligations, and occasional naps lol. During the off-season, I continue to train, attend classes, and have more free time to explore LA and hang out with my friends.

What do you do to practice self-care?

I practice self-care by taking naps, relaxing in my downtime, and spending time at the beach.

What’s next for Kiki Rice? Do you have any goals you’re looking to accomplish this year and beyond?

I am super focused on finishing out this season strong with my team. This year I hope to continue building my brand both on and off the court. I hope to continue to explore new opportunities like this that allow me to showcase my interests and talents beyond basketball!
