Singer babe, Truly Young, will make you want to dye your hair hot pink and get creative
Our newest Ones To Watch Covergirl, Truly Young, is the hot-pink-haired cutie on Instagram that everyone is talking about – although she just recently dyed her hair back to black. The artist is only 17-years-old (how is she so much cooler than any 17-year-old I’ve ever known?) and is already wise and talented beyond her years. She has been delving into the music scene since she was 13, but has finally just released her first single, “LoverBoy,” on June 10th.
Along with writing and making the song, Truly also creative directed, wrote, produced, edited, and creative directed the entire short film that she released for “LoverBoy.” Not to mention she’s also the leading lady.
We sat down with the dreamy singer to discuss her plans for music in the near future, her style, her next possible hair color, and more. Check out the exclusive interview and photoshoot below, and see for yourself why we think she is absolutely one to watch out for!

Tell us a little bit of how you first began getting involved in music and when did you decide you wanted to have that be a career?
Music has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. But, I got serious about it when I was 13. I taught myself how to play the guitar and began writing songs almost every day.
I haven’t stopped since then.
How do you think your personal style has inspired how you decide to make your music?
I get ideas for my style from rock stars, so I think that has definitely inspired me to create rock music.
You released a short film to your song, “LoverBoy,” on June 10th. What can you tell us about it?
It’s called “LoverBoy.” I would say it’s a Bonnie and Clyde story gone wrong. While I was recording the song, it was like I could see the film playing out in my head. I came up with the concept and told my friends about it, then we shot it the very next weekend.
I edited the whole thing myself and it was finished within about a month! It’s the first song and short film I’ve ever put out so I’m insanely excited to see how people react to it.

How would you describe how your music sounds and who do you take most inspiration from?
I’ve been writing a lot of different genres of music, but it’s mainly inspired by rock. I love all types of rock. Lately, i’ve been really into Nirvana, No Doubt, The Smiths, Sonic Youth, and Joy Division.
What is your favorite thing about your upcoming songs?
I love the fact that they’re true to me. I write from real life experiences and I feel like I’m telling a story from my life in every song.
You’re well known to have such badass hair and style – who inspires your beauty and fashion choices?
I am obsessed with Gwen Stefani’s fashion in the 90s. I also love Courtney Love’s style, and Penny Lane’s style in the movie “Almost Famous.”
What hair color might you try next?
It will be extremely hard for me to part with the pink hair, but maybe turquoise, or a different shade of blue.
What is your favorite film and why?
“Donnie Darko.” I love dark comedies and psychological thrillers. “Donnie Darko” covers everything from typical teenage situations/problems to mental health to time travel. I’ve never seen a film I related to more than that one.

Who is your favorite director and how have they inspired you?
My favorite director is Wes Anderson. The fact that he has a specific aesthetic and sticks to it, but still manages to make every film different, is incredible. He has definitely inspired me to direct, write, and produce my own films.
How has your art influenced your personal style?
I think expressing myself through art without caring about what anyone else thinks of it has given me the confidence and ability to approach fashion and beauty in the same way.
Five beauty products you can’t live without (you’re stranded on an island, girl)?
Probably Olaplex for my hair, Nars creamy concealer, LaMer moisturizer, Charlotte Tilbury Secret Salma lipstick, and Mara universal face oil.

I love LimeCrime, their stuff is so cute.
Who do you look up to in the art world currently and why?
I really look up to Lana Del Rey. Her writing is the most insane/amazing thing I’ve ever heard. I also love Dana Trippe’s photography. I’ve written songs inspired by the surrealism her photos.
