Toyboy & Robin Just Dropped the Ultimate Miami Mix
It’s finally getting warmer out — especially if you’re in Miami. British DJ duo Toyboy & Robin have shared with us their ultimate Miami dance mix to get you through the last few weeks of winter — and maybe entice you to fly down to Miami and see them live.
We asked the guys a few questions about the real differences between Miami and London, and their beachwear preferences. Scroll down to read their answers and hear the mix, and catch the guys at Big Beat Miami on Saturday, March 19, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. at the FDR @ Delano (1685 Collins Ave., Miami Beach). Tickets here.
You guys are from London but this mix is v Miami. What’s your secret for making your remixes sound so summery?
I guess there is no formula. Just try to keep the music fun — no dark basslines or overly serious chord progressions. A good rule of thumb is if you’d dance to it (badly), the chances are someone else will too.
What’s your best advice for someone who’s just getting into house music?
Go do some crate digging and find some of the original house records. We play a lot of older music, and as with a lot of music — the new stuff is usually regurgitated watered down version of the original stuff. Not to say that loads of the new house music isn’t great, there’s just a wealth of great stuff from the late 80s and 90s that shouldn’t be overlooked.
What do you listen to when you’re trying to get turnt for a night out?
Good question! It depends where we’re going to really. If we’re going to get crunk at a hip hop night, no doubt some Drizzy or Rozayyy (UGHHH!) will make its way to the speakers. But if we’re going to a house or techno night we’ll probably chuck on an Essential Mix or something to avoid any rogue choices from our friends.
Tell us a story: what is your craziest tour experience so far?
I don’t know if it’s more crazy or stupid, but missing our flight from San Francisco to Chicago and consequently missing our set at Mamby On The Beach was pretty annoying — we’d never missed any trains or flights touring before. We’d been playing at Audio in SF the night before, and as it was our debut show in USA, probably had a few too many drinks. We both ended up sleeping through all of our alarms by a good four hours after the flight had left. We hit up MOTB when we arrived, and it was fully sick so we were gutted 🙁
What’s the main difference between Miami girls and London girls?
#booty HAHA.
We don’t really know too many Miami girls, but maybe we’ll revisit this question after our trip. We love our London girls too though… shouting you out — we sees yaaaa!
Beach or pool? Why?
Beach to chill. Pool to swim. Nobody got time for sharks or jellyfish.
Do you believe in man sandals?
WHAT ARE THOOOOOSE?! I think we both used to own a pair but now it’s strictly a flip-flops ting!
Since you’re heading to Miami, what’s the one summer clothing item you guys would never be caught dead in?
T: Speedos. I just haven’t got the bottle to pull them off… yet!
R: Crocs. SO SO BAD. The little air holes? The all rubber shoe? dead.
