Torii Wolf – “t/here”

Torii Wolf’s is undoubtedly the most exciting trip-hop exponent right now. Their sound is richly steeped in big tent “alternative” music and it never fails to be the kind of music that immediately and almost effortlessly shuts the rest of the world out like only the song mattered.

“T/here” sends us to explore moody and introspective soundscapes in the most intimate way possible. Though the music and vocals are both beautiful, they’re all coated with this anxious layer of unease that can feel devastatingly vulnerable. Truly a remarkable track.

Thavoron – “Eagle”

Cambodian-American trans (she/her) artist based in Seattle who is making vulnerable and bold indie-pop music borne out of a very personal perspective, so yes, you could call her a truly unique artist.

Thavoron’s “Eagle” is written from the perspective of one who is -like the titular animal- quite free and majestic, until they’re suddenly not. What happens when someone who has such a detached and independent internal structure is “captured” and prevented from spreading their wings? The mental and spiritual bruising is a great tragedy that Thavoron explores with visceral clarity in this song.

Ashley Anne – “call me when you land”

Ashley Anne’s “call me when you land” is a relatable exploration of the ups and downs of relationships. Each song in her EP tells a story, guiding listeners through the stages of love and connection.

“call me when you land” explores the tension between the euphoria of love and the anxiety of potential loss. It uses the imagery of soaring high to illustrate moments of joy, contrasted with the inevitable crash back to reality, or at least it anxiously expects the early effervescence of love to begin dwindling, begging the other person to let them know when this euphoric feeling begins to deteriorate, either so she can prepare for the disillusionment of a breakup or perhaps work towards making sure that this relationship survives past this fleeting stage.
