SKYLAR SIMONE IS READY TO REINTRODUCE HERSELF WITH NEW EP “SHIVER”
So many of us don’t understand the years many artists put in work behind the scenes to become the big stars we know and love today. The same can be said for singer Skylar Simone who has been in the music industry for over a decade. She’s ready to claim her spot and plans to do so with the release of her upcoming EP “Shiver”. We got to chat with Skylar about her life, career and everything in between!
FEATURE INTERVIEW:
How did you get your start in the music industry? Tell us your story.
I don’t come from a musical family/background, so the discovery of my voice & love for music was very surprising to both me and my family. But it became an instantaneous passion that I knew I was meant to pursue. I started my career by singing national anthems across the US at various sporting events & by writing and releasing my own music early and uploading videos of me singing them to YouTube to share with the world. From there on, things continued to evolve & grow!
You’ve been releasing music for almost 10 years, if you could go back in time, what is one thing you would tell yourself when you first started out?
Listen to your gut! I think early on, because I was so eager to grow and learn, I put more weight into others thoughts and opinions than I did my own. Which isn’t a healthy way to live life, let alone build a career. So I would just reinstate to myself to always trust your instincts.
After being independently releasing music for a while you decided to sign to Def Jam. What are some of the biggest differences between being independent and signing with a label in your opinion?
I think the main difference is the support! It’s really exciting to build with a team of people who align with the same goals & care about the long term.
Talk to us about your new song “Shut Up”. What was the process like creating this song and creating the video for it?
I’m a big “matching seasons with music” person & ‘Shut Up’ to me screams early summer. So I was really excited to release that record in June. I love how this song flips the usual meaning of ‘Shut Up’ by using the lyric in a way that’s playful instead of the usual negative connotation. For the video, I wanted to represent visually the way the song makes me feel while listening to it….and to me that was something flirty, freeing, and lighthearted! So dancing on a rooftop with a breeze felt like the perfect setting and concept.
You’ve been working on your new EP “Shiver” for a while now. What can listeners expect from this project? What’s your current favorite song on it and why?
A reintroduction! I think this EP is a very accurate representation of who I am as an artist but also where I am in my life personally as well. The concepts all feel very “navigating through love and life in your 20’s”, which couldn’t be more fitting. And picking a favorite song is so tough, but at the moment I’d have to go with “Permission” or “Shiver”.
In your opinion, what’s a “Typical Taurus”?
I’m super into astrology so I feel like I am so aligned with my star sign. If you look up “qualities of a Taurus” it is me TO A TEE!
Walk us through what your ideal perfect studio session looks like.
My perfect studio session would be in a cozy environment, being with some of my favorite people/collaborators, good food, and creating a great song.
What’s your favorite things to do in the summertime?
The summertime is my favorite time of year so I love to be outside in nature when the weathers nice! I love going to the beach when I have time too.
What’s one thing outside of your EP that you’re looking forward to for the rest of 2024?
Touring! I’d absolutely love to travel and tour this year at some point and bring the music to life in a live setting! So definitely stay tuned.
