FEATURE INTERVIEW:
Talk to us about growing up in Baltimore and then Georgia. What was it like for you and how did it shape you into the young woman you are today?
It definitely shaped me in terms of adaptability. They both have different paces of life. I feel comfortable now in any room I’m in, which I think is important in this industry. My mom worked at a local cable show in Baltimore, so it was great to experience that. She gave me my first acting job In front of the camera at 7. She wrote a script and everything. It was awesome, I learned a lot.
I recently took a trip to Savannah and it’s so relaxing and beautiful there, being surrounded by beaches and that historical southern vibe. Talk to us about attending college there and some favorite memories you have from living there.
I absolutely love Savannah. I still consider it a home of mine and visit all the time. The harbor, food, history and entertainment are so unique. It really is the perfect college town. It was actually 2 hours from where my house was. So many great memories were made and not just because it’s one of the few cities in the U.S. you can take drinks out of bars and walk down the street with. Lol St. Patrick’s weekend was always super fun. I still might end up settling down there who knows.
How did your acting career begin?
My mom took me to my first audition in Maryland when I was 6 for a contract with a huge kid’s network at the time. I had to read a script for a commercial about cereal. I put my ALL into it haha! I remember they loved me and told my mom they wanted to take me to Florida. They told her I’d be staying in a house with other young actresses, and we’d have a “madam “to watch over us.
She didn’t feel comfortable with not being able to come with me, so she made the decision to say no. At the time I was so sad, and I was like “mom this is my dream” but now looking back I understand. Boy, do I understand. I’m grateful. Then as I got older, I was still perusing my craft. She told me she said to herself “if it’s still meant to be it’ll be.” Boy does she know how to manifest.
Take us back to your time on the Netflix show “On My Block”. Talk to us about your character, working on the show and what you learned from this experience as an actress?
I played Monse which was such a great experience because I learned a lot about myself during that time. I learned a lot about the industry as well. At the time we were just four kids thrown into this world with no idea how to navigate through it. Luckily, we had each other to lean on. That experience taught me how to be resilient no matter what the challenges are.
How did you prepare for the role of Monse?
I honestly tried to pull from my own experiences growing up in the environment I did.
Even though the show has ended people on social media still talk about how great it was and how they miss it. How does that make you feel as an up-and-coming actress? Did you expect people to love the show so much?
I see things all the time and it makes me so thankful that we’ve cultivated the fan base we have. When we shot our first season, we were just praying people watched it in general. Never could have imagined that our show would grow to what it is today.Without the fans supporting us we wouldn’t have been able to keep it running. I think everyone would love to come back and have a reunion or send off film. The fans deserve it. Who knows, maybe one day in the future.
Last year you were in the indie film “Young, Wild and Free”. Talk to us about your experience working on this project and your character Cassidy.
It was so freaking great to be a part of that. I was in an indie film that had a great script, cast, and crew. That’s all you can hope for. Playing Cassidy was such a freedom. I really wanted no reservations or boundaries with how i approached the character. I wanted her to be unpredictable. We ended up getting into Sundance which was amazing.
It was my first time at the festival, but it was also my first time seeing the film as well. You can imagine I had all the feels. I was so anxious and excited but yet scared of the response. I was so happy that people resonated with the overall message of the film. Discussing Mental health within minority communities has always been a taboo. Our film encourages the discussion about therapy and healthy ways of dealing with trauma. Its a necessary topic within black and brown families.
What is your dream role?
OMG, anything Marvel! That’s the end goal. My father and I are huge geeks when it comes to superhero’s. He just told me happy Batman Day recently haha. I started taking martial arts so I can’t wait for what the future holds. Also My favorite genre of film is sci-fi like iRobot is forever a favorite of mine. So, I’d love to have a kick ass role no matter what genre.
Being that you currently live in LA, give us a mini-itinerary of a perfect day for you? For anyone who’s never been.
Hmmm. The perfect day for me would be I think wake up- go on a nice hike somewhere or do yoga. Then go to Malibu beach afterwards for lunch. Come home for a second and get some work done. Go see a movie on Melrose rooftop theatre then afterwards go to a bar with a group of friends. Sounds like my kind of jam.
A few months ago you took a birthday trip to Norway, and we want to know all about it. What are some of the things you did while being there, food you ate and what was your overall experience like?
Haha oh boy was a time had! All I can say is that wedding was one for the books. Endless parties and pastries. I ate so much sushi and drank so much champagne. The landscape of Norway is beautiful. So much greenery and iced over lakes. The air is crisp, and the people are wonderful. It’s Disneyland for adults. Celebrating the union of two trailblazers who have forged their own path was the icing on the cake. I was so honored to have been a part of that weekend.
Where are some other places you’ve traveled to, and which has been your favorite so far?
I’ve been to Hawaii, Paris, and other notable places. However, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic are two favorites. I just love the Caribbean. The people are everything and the food is chef’s kiss! I feel closer to my tribe. I will say Norway has definitely been added to the list as a fav now!
What are your favorite Winter beauty products that you can’t live without?
To be honest I can’t live without my Fenty Skin face moisturizer. Also, my Rhode skin peptide lip treatment is a must. My skin can get so dry living in LA around fall/ winter. A Lancome or Armani beauty concealer is good to have on hand as well. Neither will crease and they seep into the skin flawlessly.
What do you have planned for the New Year?
Whew! I have something huge coming up. Something that I worked so fucking hard for, and I can’t wait til I’m able to announce it. I think people will finally get to know the real me. Not who they think I am based on a character I played. This is only the beginning boo, lol I’m excited!
