We love the song “Bad Friends.” It feels like a powerful anthem of chaos and liberation. Can you walk us through the moment or experience that sparked the idea for the song?
There are so many ways you can be bad friends, and everyone’s had one. It was inspired by a real friendship of mine that was terrible at faking it. We knew we were way more than friends, and eventually, that thing that we really thought we shouldn’t do, we ended up doing. This song is a tribute to occasions when the worst decisions make the best memories.
You said the song is about owning your mess and embracing the madness. Why do you think that message resonates so strongly right now in 2025?
I think because of social media and other social pressures, we are always trying to have it all figured out. I know for me, I’ve definitely felt that way in my 20s, but this is the perfect time to embrace the mess and madness, and I think that it’s important to do so! For the plot!
What was it like working with Poppy Bascombe, Reece Pullinger, and Billen Ted to bring “Bad Friends” to life?
So much fun! The day we wrote that, we were just messing around and having a lot of fun with lyrics. I feel really blessed to be surrounded by so many creative people in my life. I think they really helped me say everything that needed to be said in Bad Friends.
Your upcoming debut mini-album, “00:00,” includes “Bad Friends,” “A Little Bit Wild,” and “Red Light.” What themes or moods tie this body of work together?
You alluded to it earlier in your question about the mess and madness. Some of those core memories and feelings you create happen at midnight when you’re letting go. I imagine all of these songs taking place at midnight. The title also represents an ending and a beginning, just like when one day ends and another one begins at midnight.
Your European tour will take you through many major cities across Europe in November. What are you most excited to bring to the stage this time around?
I’ve been playing live for ages. Being honest, I feel most comfortable in this space. My music is all about movement and being free, so hopefully that comes across. I’ve also got great support acts from Maisi, FILLY, and The Darklings, who everyone should get to know.
Your music has amassed over a billion streams. What does that kind of reach mean to you, and how do you stay grounded in the creative process with that level of exposure?
It’s crazy to see those numbers written on a screen. I know I’m super blessed. For me, the way I write isn’t really impacted by those types of things. I often write music as a way to express and process what’s going on in my life.
You’ve said you want your music to make people feel larger than life. How do you personally tap into that feeling when you write or perform?
I know how it feels to be the opposite of “larger than life.” In school, I experienced bullying, and I noticed how it affected other people, too. I hope my music can empower and create a blissful escape, and maybe be a way to spend time with people who value you, or meet people that do make you feel larger than life.
“Bad Friends” is being called a contender for 2025’s Song of the Summer. How does that kind of buzz feel, and what would it mean to you if it truly becomes the song of the season?
That’s great to hear you say that! There are so many great songs out there this year, and I’m really happy with my own contribution. If that song did become the song of the season, it would suggest a bad mistake really was one of my best mistakes, hahaha!
