The New Miss USA Is a Casually Gorgeous U.S. Army Officer

Ladies, we have have a new Miss USA, and she’s nothing like the cookie cutter pageant girl you’d expect.

Her name is Deshauna Barber, she’s 26 years old, loves Beyoncé, hula hooping, and works as an Army officer and IT analyst for the government.

Surprised you, didn’t we?

Deshauna Barber decided to join the United States Army when she was 17 years old, following in the footsteps of both her father and her mother.

Before she received an official post, she went to Virginia State University where she earned a Bachelor’s of Science in 2011. Afterwards she was quickly commissioned as a Quartermaster Officer, which means she’s the HBIC of providing living quarters, rations, clothing, and other supplies for the troops under her command.

“I consider it to be a family tradition,” Barber said during a pre-show interview. “It’s something that runs through our veins — patriotism and service for this country.”

Currently she works as a Logistics Commander for the 988th Quartermaster Detachment Unit at Fort Mead, Maryland while also serving as an IT Analyst for the US Department of Commerce.

And somehow she found the time to win the Miss USA crown.

Makes you feel like an underachiever, right?

“I’m being able to say that no one pageant girl does the same thing or has the same background, and I’m also saying that no one soldier has the same background and does the same thing,” Barber also said in pre-show interview. “We can be feminine, we can be in beauty contests, we can be models. So there’s stereotypes on both sides that I feel like I’m breaking by even being here and being able to compete for Miss USA.”

Who knows, maybe Deshauna Barber can go on breaking stereotypes at the Miss Universe competition in December.

We’re rooting for you, girl.
